The Mordkovitch Trio: Fri 11 Sep, 12.30-1.15pm, Brighton Unitarian Church
Born in New Zealand, Katherine Wilson (violin) won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where she studied with Hugh Maguire and Manoug Parikian. A highly experienced orchestral player, she first joined the English National Opera Orchestra before moving to the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Subsequently, for many happy years, Kathy has been a member of the First Violin section of the Royal Opera House Orchestra. She has enjoyed playing under conductors such as Georg Solti, Bernard Haitink, Simon Rattle, Andrij Nelsons and Antonio Pappano and regularly works with the world’s finest singers. With the ROH, Kathy has toured to Japan, USA, Italy, Germany and Finland. In her free time she enjoys playing chamber music, cycling around London and visiting the various chamber music festivals where her son, also a violinist, is playing.
Jennifer Janse (cello) read music at Cambridge before winning scholarships to study the cello at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1991, together with pianist Virginia Hanslip, she won third prize in the prestigious Shostakovich International Chamber Music Competition in St Petersburg, Russia. Through Yehudi Menuhin’s organisation Live Music Now, Jennifer gave more than a hundred ‘community’ recitals throughout England, in schools, hospices, hospitals and care homes as well as prestigious festivals. Jennifer has played worldwide for many orchestras and ensembles including the RPO, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, Northern Ballet, The King's Consort, The English Concert, The Sixteen and European Baroque Orchestra. For twenty years she performed, broadcast and recorded with her own ensemble, The Musicke Companye. Last year she was featured live on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Breakfast’ playing Mozart and Schubert with violinist Rafael Todes and pianist Simon Phillips and performs regularly with duo partner, guitarist Fiona Harrison. Jennifer is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, an honour given to musicians who have achieved distinction in the profession.
Ilana Mordkovitch-Roos (piano) was born in Odessa, the 3rd generation of musicians who were influential in the musical and cultural life of the city. She attended a specialist Central Music School for talented children and in 1974 emigrated from the Soviet Union with her family. She studied with Sulamita Aronovsky at The Royal Northern College of Music and completed her graduate education at The Royal College of Music, London with Irina Zaritskaya. Ilana has performed in chamber music recitals across the UK, and her recording of the Grieg, Sonatas for Violin and Piano (Chandos records) with Lydia Mordkovitch received 5-star rating from BBC and Penguin CD guides. In 2012, Ilana returned to her studies at The Royal Academy of Music, where she completed her Masters in 2012 with Michael Dussek. Ilana also has a strong interest in music education. She has been teaching for more than forty years and is channelling this passion into her classes as well as organising concerts and workshops aimed at empowering and developing a love for music in her young students as well as returning, mature players.
