Recently, Robbie and Marcel from Brighton and Hove City Mission visited Birmingham City Mission to learn how they serve older people and young people in their communities π€
π In the care homes
Robbie spent time with Catherine, Pastor Zak and the team, running two services in care homes in Acocks Green. The team used stories, songs and interactive activities to get residents involved, and it was wonderful to see how much they engaged.
Robbie also chatted with residents, prayed with them and encouraged those who seemed to be struggling. He also met Nina and Zoe, who befriend older people, and swapped stories and ideas on how best to support them. It was a great reminder that the simple things (listening, having a conversation, praying with someone) can make such a difference.
π In the schools
Marcel, our Children and Young People Lead, visited a primary school and helped deliver an assembly on gratitude, using the story of the Israelites in the desert. Children from many different faith backgrounds listened attentively, and afterwards a teacher shared that he still remembered hearing the story of Moses as a child. Bible stories can stay with people for years! π
In the afternoon, Marcel joined the youth team at a secondary school, where they run a Big Questions group and a Bible study for around 15 boys aged 14 to 16. What struck him most was seeing the pupils finish their lunch quickly so they could get to Bible group. π€―
Both came back to Brighton and Hove City Mission encouraged and full of new ideas for our own work with older people, children and young people.
