On Monday 5th December a group gathered at the Lewes Road URC to pray for our bit of Brighton. As we wrestled in prayer together, one of remarked that prayer this week was hard work. Sometimes the prayers flow and you feel you are sailing with the wind in your sails. Other times, like today, prayer is a hard slog! But we were encouraged by the account of Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite - one of David's 3 mighty warriors. In 2 Samuel 23 we're told that he "was among the three warriors with David when they defied the Philistines. The men of Israel retreated in the place they had gathered for battle, but Eleazar stood his ground and attacked the Philistines until his hand was tired and stuck to his sword. The LORC brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops came back to him, but only to plunder the dead." (v9-10, CSB)
When the battle is fierce and everyone seems to have retreated, we should stand firm and pray in the spiritual battle
In the New Testament, Paul describes Epaphras as someone who is always wrestling for the church in his prayers (Colossians 4:12)
May the Lord raise up an army of such praying men and women in our day.
