As we gathered to pray today we noted that 2 brothers came ready to share the same verses from the end of Jeremiah 32. So we took encouragement from God's new covenant promises as we prayed for the city, the churches and each other.
Thank you Lord.

Today at 12noon 5 of us gathered together at the Lewes Road United Reformed Church, Brighton to seek the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for ourselves, the church and the people of Brighton.
We were encouraged by the invitation of Jesus in Matthew 10: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
We meet again next Monday at 12pm. Everyone is welcome to Come+Pray or be prayed for in the name of Jesus Christ.

Today (Monday 12th Dec), despite the wintry weather, a group came together to pray.
We were encouraged from the 2 Corinthians 1:3-5:
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows." (CSB)
A major focus of our time was spent praying for people we knew were facing troubles. We prayed for gospel comfort to flow through us to others as we ourselves experience help from the God of all comfort.

On Monday 5th December a group gathered at the Lewes Road URC to pray for our bit of Brighton. As we wrestled in prayer together, one of remarked that prayer this week was hard work. Sometimes the prayers flow and you feel you are sailing with the wind in your sails. Other times, like today, prayer is a hard slog! But we were encouraged by the account of Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite - one of David's 3 mighty warriors. In 2 Samuel 23 we're told that he "was among the three warriors with David when they defied the Philistines. The men of Israel retreated in the place they had gathered for battle, but Eleazar stood his ground and attacked the Philistines until his hand was tired and stuck to his sword. The LORC brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops came back to him, but only to plunder the dead." (v9-10, CSB)
When the battle is fierce and everyone seems to have retreated, we should stand firm and pray in the spiritual battle
In the New Testament, Paul describes Epaphras as someone who is always wrestling for the church in his prayers (Colossians 4:12)
May the Lord raise up an army of such praying men and women in our day.

On Monday 28th November we gathered to pray for our part of the city and for its churches. We were encouraged to pray with urgency and faith from some CH Spurgeon Sermons on Revival. The Risen Jesus exhorted the Ephesian church to return to their first love. Nothing else matters for the christian or the churches than Christ.

On Monday 14th November we doubled our numbers! 4 of us with a heart to pray for the churches and people in North and East Brighton spent an hour in prayer together. We took encouragement from Jesus' parable about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector who went to pray in the temple. We need the humble disposition of the Tax Collector who ..."stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
Jesus explained that "this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18, CSB).
As we humble ourselves the Lord has promised to lift us up in due time (1 Peter 5:6)

We met today to pray, taking encouragement from Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones' 4th sermon on Revival. "Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and that the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died." (Genesis 27:18). According the DMLJ in 1959 we will re-open the wells when we return to 1. a true understanding and experience of the person and work of Christ - especially the blood of his cross and 2. a true understanding and experience of the Holy Spirit who points us to Christ.
We also took encouragement from Jim Cymbala's book "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire" (1997)- the church, and especially its leaders, must return to the priorities of prayer and the word.
We prayed - crying out - for ourselves, the church and the people in this part of the city.

We gathered to pray today in the Stevens Room at the Lewes Road United Reformed Church, Brighton. Before we prayed we briefly reflected on the third of Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones' sermons on revival - preached in 1959:
"So Isaac left there, camped in the Gerar Valley, and lived there. Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and that the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. He gave them the same names his father had given them ."(Genesis 26:17,18)
MLD took the picture of the Philistines stopping up Abraham's wells and asks us where the blockages are today that need to be removed to reach the living water of the Spirit's work reviving the church? He highlights the need to return to a true belief in (1) the living God, sovereign and at work in the world today. (2) The Bible as our authority and (3) The sinfulness of man and the righteous wrath of God.
Revival begins with the church and has often followed the rediscovery of foundational beliefs such as these.
We prayed with the attitude of the father in Mark 9 :24 “I do believe; help my unbelief!” for the church in 2022.
We prayed for the church we belong to - , for those at Varley Park, where the church meets and for the people of the Lewes Road corridor.
May the Risen Jesus answer our prayers and draw more prayer warriors for this time.
