Last Friday was incredibly busy for us. We opened the doors at 1pm and the queue of people needing help stretched from our door to the pavement for an hour, non-stop. Once the queue had settled down, we still had a steady stream of people coming to us until we closed at 3pm. We supported a total of 41 people, meaning that we helped one person every three minutes. And we saw every cross section of our community - single people and families - and a full range of challenges affecting everyone. Well done to our volunteers who literally didn't stop all day; packing extra parcels, running to get pet food, cleaning products and toiletries, and getting more and more bread out of the freezer. Days like these can be tiring both physically and mentally, but the team rose to the challenge. Thank you also to Focus4Hope who shared with us their KFC frozen chicken plus lots of bread and vegetables, and to Sainsbury's at both Brighouse and Rastrick, who sent us lots of bread too. These items made a lovely addition to our food parcels and went down a treat with our clients

This Refugee Week, we reflect on this year's theme: Courage.

Courage is often found in the everyday moments that can go unseen. It takes courage to ask for help when times are tough. Courage to start again in a new place. Courage to support your family through uncertainty. Courage to keep moving forward despite challenges.

At Brighouse Central Foodbank, we meet people from many different backgrounds and walks of life, each with their own story. We are continually inspired by the strength, resilience and determination shown by those in our community.

This Refugee Week, we recognise the courage of refugees rebuilding their lives and celebrate the power of kindness, welcome and community.

Together, we can help ensure that everyone feels supported, valued and able to look forward with hope.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the diversity that makes our community stronger.

At Brighouse Central Foodbank, our doors are open to everyone who needs support, and we are committed to treating every person with dignity, kindness, and respect.

We know that no one should have to face hunger alone. Together, we can build a community where everyone feels welcome and supported. We are proud to serve people from all walks of life and remain committed to helping anyone in our community who needs us.

We'd like to say a very big thank you to everybody who is donating food to us at the moment, especially the lovely customers at Tesco, who gave us so much last week that our donation point was overflowing! We were very busy in May and helped 18% more households than we did in January, which has traditionally always been our busiest month. This just shows how much people are struggling currently, and how we are needed more than ever. Thank you to everybody who supports us. We couldn't do what we do without you all.

Can anybody recommend please a local firm who would be able to supply and install an internal roller/shutter door, similar to the one in the picture? Thanks in advance :)

Thank you to Lottie Shaw's who visited us again last Friday and donated lots of cookies and other sweet treats to us. These will be a lovely addition to our food parcels and they left us enough to share with other charities such as Building Bridges Food Hub Brighouse and Focus4Hope :)

As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, we'd like to say a very big THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers. They truly are an incredible team, making a big difference to our community, and we couldn't do what we do without them. Thank you also to all volunteers everywhere, who are doing their bit to make things better. We hope you've enjoyed reading about some of our Volunteers this week. There's been motivation, inspiration and humour, which kind of summarises nicely what the atmosphere is like at the Foodbank each week! If you'd like to find out more about volunteering with us, please complete the form on our website www.brighousecmc.org/foodbank or email us on [email protected]

On Day 7 of National Volunteer Week, we'd like to introduce our volunteer Adam to you. We had no idea when we sent out our interview questions for these Facebook posts, that we were going to receive such funny responses back from Adam 😂 We think that he is destined for a future stand-up career! Watch this space .......

How long have you been volunteering at Brighouse Central Foodbank?
5 years (blimey, it's true what they say, you really are stuck here once you start).

Why did you choose to volunteer at Brighouse Central Foodbank?
I had all these plans for my gap year. Travelling, seeing the sites, Paris, Berlin, Vienna. Then Covid came along and put a stop to all that. Luckily though, the Foodbank remained open wanting volunteers. Lucky me hey...

How often do you help out at the Foodbank?
A couple of hours a week. Just enough so it counts as my daily exercise.

Please describe some of the tasks that you carry out at the Foodbank.
As the one of the few volunteers who doesn't suffer from back/knee/general joint pain, who isn't on a waiting list for a hip operation, or recovering from major heart surgery, most of the heavy lifting jobs get left to me. Unfortunately I've never been blessed with strength, so I'm as much use as the rest of them with these tasks.

What is your favourite task?
Not sure I understand this question... I like the tea break we've recently started having.

What is your least favourite task?
Where to start... having more donations to date when the table has just been cleared, bringing in Parfetts deliveries, decanting sugar into small plastic bags (yes it's definitely sugar officer), assisting quality control with squashy sprouts, the list goes on.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at the Foodbank?
Finding out what's worth watching from the other volunteers.

Would you recommend volunteering at the Foodbank and if so, why?
If you like being surrounded by mounds of baked beans and pasta, then yes it's the place for you.

What advice would you offer any new volunteers who might be just about to join us?
I was once told this by another volunteer "if at first you don't succeed, try a bigger hammer."

On Day 6 of National Volunteer Week, we'd like to introduce our volunteer Sally to you.
Sally comes to us most Fridays and has been volunteering with us for 13 years. She joined us because "following retirement, I wanted to help in the volunteer sector, and was attracted to the vital role of the Foodbank locally, and the other volunteers." Sally describes her main duties as "dating donated foods, packing food parcels when required, sorting food boxes in the packing room - any activities really." When we asked Sally what she enjoyed most about volunteering at the Foodbank, she said "taking part in an enjoyable rewarding experience, with the company of like-minded friends and our 'can do' attitude. Helping the less fortunate in our community." Would she recommend volunteering with us? "Yes, there will always be support available for newcomers - we're a friendly group. Get to know the tasks gradually, ask when unsure." Thank you Sally for everything that you do for the Foodbank, your experience is invaluable.
