Would you like to know more about your faith and answer some of life’s big questions?

Then come along to Alpha, running at St. Joseph the Worker in the Parish Hall for 11 weeks from 7.15 to 9.00pm on Wednesdays 16 September
until 02 December. There will also be a day at Most Holy Redeemer, Billericay on Saturday, 14 November, 10am to 4pm.

Every session begins with a welcome drink on arrival, then a meal, followed by a video on an aspect of the Christian
faith and concluding with discussion in small groups.

Everyone is welcome, non-
Christians, Christians and Catholics alike. The course is for those who are enquiring about the faith, those who would like to know more, and those who
would like to deepen their faith. More information about Alpha is available

This coming Sunday, Jesus promises that when even two or three gather in his name, he is there among them. This promise is fulfilled in a special way whenever the Church gathers for Mass.

At Mass, Christ is not merely remembered. The same Jesus who was born at Bethlehem, died upon the Cross and rose again is truly present upon the altar.

Through the words of consecration, the bread and wine become his Body and Blood, while retaining their outward appearance.

This is why Catholics treat the Mass with such reverence. We genuflect, kneel and remain prayerfully silent because we are in the presence of Our Lord. He gathers us around his altar, offers himself for us and gives himself to us in Holy Communion. Where the faithful gather in his name, Christ is among them; and in the Holy Eucharist, he remains with his Church in the most precious way of all.

This Sunday we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

‘In Mary we contemplate what the Church is in her mystery, in her pilgrimage of faith, and what she will be in the homeland at the end of her journey.’

Pope Benedict XVI

May Our Lady, assumed body and soul into the glory of Heaven, help us to keep our eyes fixed upon the things of Heaven and lead us always closer to her Son.

On 27th July, Fr Gary will be setting out from Blackheath early in the morning to walk approximately 50 miles to Canterbury in a single day. This route is most of the traditional 'Pilgrims' Way' which goes back to the Middle Ages.

This will be the first time he has ever attempted anything like this. But this isn't simply a physical challenge. It is a pilgrimage undertaken to support the life and mission of our two parish communities: St Joseph's, Hutton & Shenfield, and St John and St Erconwald, Ingatestone.

Together, we are just one small part of the Church, but we believe that small things matter. Our churches are places of prayer and worship, but they are also places of welcome, friendship and hope. We work closely with our local schools, helping to educate and form young people in the Catholic faith. We support local charities, like the food-bank, and community initiatives, visit the sick and housebound, accompany families through baptisms, weddings and funerals, and strive to be a visible Christian presence in our local area. We offer encouragement and hope to struggling families. Much of this work happens quietly and without recognition, but it is at the very heart of parish life.

Like so many families, however, our parishes face increasing financial pressures. Both of the parishes are small and, while this is a blessing in so many ways, it does bring its challenges. The cost of maintaining our churches continues to rise, yet we remain determined to keep our doors open, to serve our neighbours generously and to hand on the faith to the next generation. Every penny raised through this pilgrimage will go directly towards supporting that mission.
