Last week we got another call from CAB looking for a food parcel for someone in need. We get a lot of calls on Fridays because that’s usually when the most vulnerable get placed in Brandon, Brandon is just one of those places.
When I said to the operator that we couldn’t assist he was a little bewildered, I explained “I’m sorry but we just cannot afford to run a food bank anymore”, I then explained that we feed people on a Tuesday now with a community meal, that’s the best we can do.
You see local charities on the wrong advice of those in low level power believe that we have access to 11 billion pounds because we are a Church of England Church! that is far from the truth, we do not have access to any C of E funds.
St Peter’s Church in Brandon is a charity within itself and fully reliant upon itself, in fact it has to pay the C of E £32k every year just to have a half time Priest, we are fortunate to have a half time Priest that works full time and we are thankful to our diocese for the support they give us in this.
All our accounts are public knowledge and accessible, we are now living on our contingency plan, that means we are on our last legs.
We have a Grade 1 listed building that needs 1.1m of work doing 😂 like that’s ever going to happen, however we continue to do all that we can with what we have.
The purpose of this post is to educate and show people what is really going on in the background, it’s not a plea for money.
So when someone asks questions like “why is coffee caravan not on the market” or “what happened to the food bank” it’s just that we don’t have the capacity anymore, for now.
One thing you can be sure of is that St Peter’s Parish Church will always put the community first in all that we do, we will continue to feed the hungry, offer a cup of water (biblical) to those in need, and we will carry on singing out Joy to the World.
