What does it mean to live in a covenant with God?

In Exodus 24, God brought His people to Mount Sinai to seal a covenant of love, protection, and commitment. But while the Old Covenant revealed our human inability to stay faithful, Jesus came to fulfill it, offering a New Covenant written on our hearts through His grace.

Swipe through to explore how the journey from Sinai to the Cross changes how we live, love, and pray today!

Our youth on mission in Uganda 🇺🇬🫶🏼

“Jesus’ love, provision and the joy he gives his people who are at the lowest of lows. One of the people in the slums had been abandoned by their husband and was about to have another baby. Later she got cancer but God saw her struggling and healed her. Through her life she keeps on praising God; Even when she is living in a small one room home she continues to praise him, giving thanks even with such trying circumstances” - Simeon

Exodus is ultimately a love story of God tenderly and patiently wooing a people to Himself. What we are looking at at Mount Sinai is like a giant wedding ceremony where we, in light of what God has already done, are to say “yes” to Him. We often totally misunderstand this thing we call the law because our society views laws as impersonal codes focused on punishment. But in Hebrew, the word is Torah, which means “instruction”, the personal guidance a father gives to his son.

Crucially, the Ten Commandments do not start with what we have to do. They start with who God is and the fact that He has already delivered us from Pharaoh, a harsh taskmaster. They are a way for us to live free in serving Him, functioning like relational wedding vows rather than a way to earn His acceptance. These commands are actually an inward “heart scan” rather than just an outward checklist. When you look at a command like “do not covet”, it reveals that all our outward sin starts with breaking the very first commandment by placing our own twisted desires for success, money, or productivity on the throne of our worship.

Because this heart scan shows that none of us measure up on our own, we have to look to Jesus as our mediator. Christ came to fulfil all that the Lord demanded, bridging the gap and taking the curse of death upon Himself so that we could be drawn close to a holy God. Ultimately, we are invited into a secure relationship on His terms, empowered by His Spirit to walk in holiness, not out of a heavy sense of duty and guilt, but out of pure joy because of how deeply we are loved.
