Home Service Sheet for Sunday 2nd February 2025

Call To Worship: Zephaniah 3:14-17

Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
O daughter of Jerusalem!
The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;
he has cleared away your enemies.
The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst;
you shall never again fear evil.
On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Fear not, O Zion;
let not your hands grow weak.
The Lord your God is in your midst,
a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.

Opening Prayer

Gracious and loving God, we praise and worship You today for making Yourself known to us through Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You for being our Father and forgiving all of our sins, not because we deserve it, but because Christ died in our place to pay the price for all of our sins. Thank You for all that You have done for us, and for the future hope of glory that we have through faith in Jesus as Saviour. Thank You that because we are in Christ, You are for us. May we never forget that amazing truth. As we read Your Word today help us to understand it and put it into practice. This we ask in Jesus’ Name and to Your glory, amen.

Hymn: How deep the Father’s love by Stuart Townend
https://youtu.be/QeUUmuwZIRs?si=2R0Ui407qaE8rHnm

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss – the Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life – I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart – His wounds have paid my ransom.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Bible Reading: Romans 8:31-39

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died - more than that, who was raised - who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Reflection

Paul’s letter to the Romans arguably contains the greatest description of God’s love that we find in all of Scripture. Before we look at that, though, it is important for us to remember what God’s love is not. The kind of love that God has for those who are called according to His purposes, is a love that wants the best for those He loves. It is a love that desires to transform us into the likeness of His Son in holiness and righteousness. As we study this passage of Scripture let us remember this, and not get caught up in the wishy-washy kind of love that our world today insists upon. Love that allows others to do that which will harm them and turn them away from God us not love at all!

In verse 31 Paul asks who can be against us if God is for us? What I believe that he is getting at here is that compared with the love of God for us, and His grace and favour towards us, all opposition is as nothing. The love of God is so much greater than the hatred or opposition of any human being. Paul further emphasises the love of God by pointing us to the wondrous gift of His Son, the Lord Jesus, who died for us on the cross. We see the extent of God’s love in this ultimate sacrifice - that’s how important we are to the Lord and how loved we are! Notice also that all that we have is ours because of what God has done for us, rather than what we have done to deserve it.

If the Lord is on our side, which He is, then we have nothing to fear from the accusations of others (v.33). In the Bible the great accuser of the brethren is a title reserved for the devil (Revelation 12:10), and I suspect this may be what Paul has in mind here. God’s love for us, and election of us, cannot be overcome or cancelled by the worst that the world or the devil can throw at us. We can be assured of our salvation if we have faith in Christ as the Son of God who died to take away our sins. We do not need to fear what will happen when we die if we are in Christ. Only God Himself can condemn human beings to hell, not the devil, because God reigns over everyone and everything completely.

Paul goes on to write about some of the worst things that can be part of our human experience. Persecution, danger, famine, violence, personal and natural disasters are all imposters that cannot separate us from God. Only rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ can separate us from God. That is not to say that these trials and hardships are easy to live through, because our human experience will tell us that they are not. Nonetheless, God is with us through them, and gives us the courage and endurance to keep on following Him. Verse 37 tells us that we are conquerors over all these terrible circumstances, not because of our own strength or endurance, but rather because of Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. Whatever we may face in this life, even death itself, it is nothing that can separate us from God’s love for us.

As a younger Christian I struggled to fully grasp the significance of this. I used to believe that we could believe in Christ, but then turn our back on Him and lose our salvation. This, however, is not what the Scriptures teach us. Rather, they speak of us being chosen by God for salvation even before the world was created. God’s purposes and plans cannot be thwarted by human effort or demonic scheme. Another way of putting this (thanks Janet!) would be to say that we cannot argue with God or His purposes and plans. What God has purposed He will bring to completion in our lives and in the lives of all who have received His gracious gift of faith in His Son.

So, can anything separate us from the love of God found in and demonstrated by the Lord Jesus Christ? The simple and glorious answer is ‘no’! By this we should be greatly encouraged and motivated to give God the praise and glory He deserves. Amen!

Prayer

Almighty God, we thank You for the wonderful assurance of salvation we have in Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. You have said in Your Word that nothing can separate us from Your love in Jesus, and we praise You that Your gift of faith endures through all the trials of life. We pray today for those who are struggling in their walk with You. Grant them courage and perseverance, especially in the face of persecution. We know, O Lord, that in some parts of this world following You can be very dangerous due to violence or threats of imprisonment, and yet Your Church is growing. Lord Jesus, continue to build Your Church throughout the world and in our own nation that many more folk would enter into eternal life and live to Your praise and glory. This we ask in Your Name, amen.

Benediction

Grant to us, O gracious Lord, minds to meditate on You, eyes to behold You, ears to listen to Your Word, hearts to love You, and lives to proclaim You. These things we ask You to do in and through the power of Your Holy Spirit within us, amen.

Home Service Sheet for Sunday 26th January 2025

Call To Worship: Jeremiah 23:1-6

“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord. Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, in this time of devotion help us to worship You. In the midst of our feelings and fears grant us the capacity to love You with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Help us to hear Your Word and respond to it in faith with obedience as our acceptable act of worship. Lord, we know that we have sinned against You in our actions, words and thoughts. We are truly sorry and ask now for Your forgiveness. Compassionate and Ever-Loving God, in Your mercy, remove the scales from our eyes and lead us to faith and repentance. Thank You Lord. May we rejoice now in the unity that we all share in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen!

Hymn: Blest be the tie that binds by John Fawcett
https://youtu.be/hVGE2R2wq5w

Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

Before our Father’s throne
We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
Our comforts and our cares.

We share our mutual woes,
Our mutual burdens bear,
And often for each other flows
The sympathising tear.

When for a while we part,
This thought will soothe our pain,
That we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again.

This glorious hope revives
Our courage by the way,
While each in expectation lives,
And longs to see the day.

From sorrow, toil, and pain,
And sin we shall be free;
And perfect love and friendship reign
Through all eternity.

Amen.

Bible Reading: John 17:1-26

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Reflection

Today’s world is one that is often marked out by division and disunity. Yes, there is war and the tensions of fighting factions in some nations, but often it goes much deeper than that. There is rivalry between sports fans and political activists, but even that is only scraping the surface. The media likes to highlight differences between peoples and report tensions over whatever is the topic of the day. Attitudes to vaccines, the colour of peoples’ skin or economic differences. Against this backdrop we are going to be thinking about unity today, and specifically Christian unity.

In our Bible reading, John records Jesus praying “The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one” (v.22). Our Lord is praying for His disciples then, and throughout history, asking that they may be one as God is One. The question that this raises for me is what kind of unity is Jesus praying for. To understand this, I believe we need to back up and explore the context of His prayer. First of all we must note that Jesus prays this on the night that He was arrested, which in turn led up to His crucifixion. This is one of the last things Jesus does freely before His death for us on the cross.

Secondly, we need to look at what else He prays about. Jesus prays that the Father would glorify Him, as He had glorified His Heavenly Father. What is about to happen will happen because God has planned it that way and has a most wonderful purpose for it. Through Jesus’ death, our Lord is glorified. Jesus prays for all those whom the Father has given to Him – disciples who have heard His teaching and continued to follow Him. Verse 8 indicates that they have received Jesus’ words of truth and through them have recognised who He is – the Messiah, the Son of God. He prays for their protection from spiritual danger in this world, but not for physical protection.

Thirdly, Jesus prays “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” (v.17) I believe that this line of the prayer is particularly important and helps us to understand what kind of unity Jesus is praying for. Jesus’ unity is one that is based upon the very Word of God, or the truth. Unity that is based simply on a common name, such as ‘Christian’, is not what Jesus prays for. That is a superficial unity that plasters over the cracks without getting to the root cause of them. On many things God’s Word is very clear, and we cannot have unity with those who disagree with, or reject, that Word.

Salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and not through Islam, Hinduism or the Mormon Church. Jesus was fully human and fully divine, born of the Virgin Mary. All sin is sin, and without God’s forgiveness and repentance humanity is rightly condemned to hell. These are core truths that we find in God’s Word. If we do not agree with the Scriptures then we cannot have unity with God, or with other Christians. In the Church of England a creed is recited each week in church services, and this contains many of those essential Gospel truths around which we can unite as God’s chosen people.

We should also note that the truth of God’s Word also makes us holy. If we hear it, understand it, believe it and obey it we are made more and more holy. We, as God’s people, are called to be a holy people, dedicated to the One holy God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has created us and knows what is best for us. If we will listen and obey then true Gospel unity is something that will increase amongst us. Another aspect of true Christian unity is that it leads to evangelism. Other people will see the unity we have in Christ, listen to the Gospel message of truth and come to believe for themselves. Through this the whole Church will grow.

Finally the unity for which Jesus prays is not simply for this life. “Father, I desire that they also… may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” (v.24) This prayer is for all eternity, and through the answering of this prayer we are made family in Jesus. We are all connected together as members of God’s family through the Gospel of truth and grace. Let us celebrate true Christian unity, and be encouraged that we are all family because of what Jesus has done for us at the cross. Amen!

Pastoral Prayer

Gracious God, we come before You wanting to echo the prayer of Your Son, the Lord Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane. Just as You are One, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may we all be one with You. Lead us all into Your truth of the Gospel so that we may be united around the core of the faith. We pray for all teachers and preachers of Your Word, asking that You would keep them faithful to the Gospel truth, relying on You rather than on human wisdom alone. Help each of us, as Your people, to listen with discernment, comparing what is said in Your Name with what we read in Your Word. May we also proclaim the truth of the Gospel to friends, neighbours and family, that through our witness others may come to a true knowledge of You and love for You. This we ask in Jesus’ Name, and for His glory, amen.

Benediction

Heavenly Father, send us out now to live as Your children of light in this dark world. May the fruit of the light of Christ be found in all that we do and say. This we pray in Jesus’ Name, amen!

Home Service Sheet for Sunday 19th January 2025

Call To Worship: Psalm 1:1-6

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Opening Prayer

Almighty God, we bring You our praise and thanks today for You alone are God and to You alone belongs the praise, glory, adoration and blessing. It was You who created all things and without You nothing was made. Help us to recognise Your handiwork around us as we wonder at the beauty of Your creation. Gracious God, we thank You especially today for Your written Word. Help us to read it, to meditate upon it, and to apply its truth to our lives. May we not be conformed to the ways of this world, but rather may we become more and more like Your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ, in whose Name we pray, amen.

Hymn: Take time to be holy by William D Longstaff
https://youtu.be/Uawzv85Nmow?si=sLl7ZvDbzeh2XY3-

Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord!
Abide in Him always and feed on His Word;
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on.
Spend much time in secret with Jesus alone;
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be.
Thy friends, in thy conduct, His likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy, let Him be thy guide;
And run not before Him whatever betide.
In joy, or in sorrow, still follow thy Lord,
And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word!

Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul;
Each thought and each temper beneath His control.
Thus, led by His Spirit and filled with His love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.

Amen.

Bible Reading: Matthew 7:1-6

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

Reflection

As Christians, there are certain Bible verses and short passages that we know well, and the short passage we’re going to look at today is one of them. We have heard these words many times before and so we may be tempted to switch off, thinking that we already know everything that we’re ever going to need to know about this passage. We must not forget, however, that understanding the Scriptures is not simply about human effort and intellect. Rather, it is about reading the Bible in context, with the help of the Holy Spirit, so that we might understand what God has revealed to His people. It is God the Holy Spirit who sheds light on the Word so that we might understand and apply it, thereby giving glory to God.

As we study these verses from Matthew’s Gospel today, I would like to begin by suggesting that verse 1 does not mean what it might, at first, appear to say. Jesus said, “Do not judge, so that you will not be judged.” This verse has been used by false teachers and con-artists alike within the Church to shut down biblical discernment and critical thinking. Jesus is not saying that we shouldn’t think or make judgments about the actions of others. Rather, he is pointing us towards the biblical approach of applying the same standards to ourselves as we do to others. Some folk are easier on themselves than they are on other people, while others give others the benefit of the doubt that they wouldn’t dream of extending to themselves.

Even in the passage itself, Jesus goes on to speak about taking logs out of our own eyes so that we can take specks out of the eyes of others (vv.4-5). In other words, judgment is still to take place, but according to the same standards we apply to ourselves. These standards are found in God’s Word and show us how we should live as Christians. We are to obey God first, which involves us being loving, trustworthy and honest in our dealings with one another and with others. We must be open to godly and biblical correction so that we can repent of our sins, be forgiven and become more like Jesus.

Elsewhere in the Bible there are many examples of God’s people being called to judge the words and actions of other people. Let me give you a few examples. In Proverbs 27:5 we find this, “Better is open rebuke than hidden love.” To rebuke someone requires you to judge their actions as bad and needing correction. Proverbs 31:9 says, “Open your mouth, judge righteously…” Judging rightly is a part of the Christian life that we are to put into practice. Listen to these words of Jesus, recorded in John’s Gospel, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” (John 7:24)

The Church, and we as individual Christians, can and do get ourselves into all kinds of trouble by not following the biblical command to judge rightly, or according to God’s standards. It is not an optional extra, and we must begin by measuring ourselves against God’s Word. Do our actions and speech match up to the holiness in which Jesus calls us to live? We are to help one another in Christ to become ever more like Jesus. May we, with much prayer and love, be there for one another, correcting and rebuking where that is necessary so that we may be good witnesses for our Lord who is perfect in every way.

At the end of our reading, we have a verse that doesn’t seem to link very easily with what has come before, so what are we to make of it? To help us understand Jesus’ words here we need to understand that dogs in the First Century were wild and dangerous creatures, and pigs were the ultimate symbol of something that was unclean. In other words that which is holy and righteous should not be mixed with that which is wild and impure. To know whether something or someone is unclean requires judgment based on God’s Word. The Scriptures are not to be ‘wasted’ on those who knowingly and consistently reject God, but rather focused on those who will respond with repentance. Amen!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word and Your perfect and righteous ways that You have revealed to us. Keep each of us today, we pray, from hypocritical thoughts and unrighteous judgement of others. Instead, O Lord, grant to us the wisdom and discernment we need to judge between that which is good and that which is evil in ourselves, in the world around us and in our brothers and sisters in Christ. Help us to provide loving challenge and correction to one another where that is needed and keep us walking humbly before You all the days of our lives. Help us also to consider the needs of others before our own so that we might bring honour and glory to Your Name, amen.

Benediction

Heavenly Father, may we not settle for living a defeated life. Instead, may the intercession of Your Son, the Lord Jesus, assure us that an increasing degree of holiness is possible thanks to His grace and power. Give us a love for You that is always accompanied by a love of holiness, amen.
