🏏 LEGENDS SHINE AT SECOND ANNUAL WALKING CRICKET TOURNAMENT

The second annual “Active Legends” Walking Cricket Tournament finals took place this past weekend, bringing together senior players from across the local community for an enjoyable afternoon of cricket, friendship, laughter and, of course, a little healthy competition!

Organised by Bradford Grand Mosque in collaboration with the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, the tournament once again demonstrated how sport can bring people together while providing meaningful opportunities for older members of our community to remain active, connected and involved.

The emphasis throughout the day was on enjoyment, camaraderie and a good laugh rather than taking the competition too seriously. There was plenty of banter, smiles and encouragement between the players. However, when the tournament reached its crucial stages, the competitive spirit certainly made an appearance! As innings came to an end and teams needed just a few more runs to be crowned champions, the atmosphere grew noticeably more intense, with players, teammates and spectators eagerly watching every ball!

Beyond the cricket itself, the real value of an initiative like this is the opportunity it provides for our seniors to spend time together, maintain friendships and build new connections. Staying socially active can help reduce loneliness and isolation, while regular physical activity supports mobility, coordination, fitness and general wellbeing. Walking cricket provides an accessible and enjoyable way for people to remain active without the physical demands of traditional cricket.

One participant reflected on the importance of the initiative, saying, “It really helps with loneliness. You come along, see familiar faces, have a laugh and spend time with people. It gives you a reason to get out and be around others.”

Another highlighted the physical benefits, commenting, “It helps me to remain active. At our age, it is important that we keep moving, and doing it through cricket makes it enjoyable.”

These reflections capture why initiatives like the “Active Legends” Walking Cricket Tournament are so important. Creating regular opportunities for senior members of our community to stay physically active, socially connected and involved in positive activities can make a genuine difference to wellbeing and quality of life.

A huge Jazakumullah Khairan to The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation for their continued support and partnership in making this initiative possible. We are also grateful to the team from al-HAYAT Bradford for their help in organising and facilitating the event.

And, of course, a heartfelt thank you to all of our Active Legends who took part and helped make the day such a success. Your enthusiasm, humour, sportsmanship and competitive spirit made for a memorable afternoon, proving once again that age is no barrier to enjoying the game!

InSha’Allah, we look forward to welcoming our Legends back again next year, for more cricket, more laughter, more friendship and, perhaps, a few more nail-biting finishes!

A BLESSED GATHERING IN THE COMPANY OF QIBLA HAZRAT SAHIB

Alhamdulillah, this Thursday, Bradford was blessed with a beautiful gathering of Dhikr in the presence of Qibla Hazrat Sahib, Shaykh Muhammad Habib-ur-Rehman Mahboobi Sahib, founder and patron of Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam Grand Mosque (Bradford Grand Mosque) and custodian of Astana-Aliya Faizpur Sharif.

Qibla Hazrat Sahib recently arrived in the UK from Faizpur Sharif, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, and it was truly heartwarming to see people traveling from across the UK to be present in this blessed gathering, to sit in their company and benefit from their words of wisdom and spiritual guidance.

The central message of the gathering was a reminder of the purpose of our existence: that we have been created to worship Allah Almighty. The path of our lives, therefore, is one of servitude, worship and seeking the help of our Creator at every step.

In light of Surah Al-’Asr, Qibla Hazrat Sahib reminded us of the precious and fleeting nature of time. Just as a block of ice rapidly melts beneath the intense heat of the sun, our lives are continuously passing before us, moment by moment. Every second that passes can never be recovered, and therefore the believer must strive to use every moment in a manner that earns the pleasure of Allah Almighty.

Qibla Hazrat Sahib further reminded us of the profound relationship between knowing Allah and prostrating before Him. The more a person comes to know their Lord, the greater their desire becomes to humble themselves before Him in sujood and to fulfill the purpose for which they were created: to be His servant.

We were also reminded of the reality that awaits every person on the Day of Judgement, when people will ultimately turn towards that which they worshipped. At that moment, all will be in despair except those believers who placed their trust in Allah Almighty, awaiting the call of their Lord and hoping for His mercy and ultimate favour. It was a powerful reminder of where our true hope should lie and where our hearts should be directed throughout the journey of this life.

Towards the conclusion of the gathering, Qibla Hazrat Sahib offered particularly heartwarming advice on the importance of attaining a contented and tranquil soul and making the pleasure of Allah Almighty the ultimate objective of our lives. The Qur’anic description of the tranquil soul returning to its Lord, pleased and pleasing to Him, serves as a beautiful reminder of the destination every believer should strive for.

May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to understand the message of the Qur’an, to worship Him with sincerity, to value every moment of the precious life He has granted us, and to live our lives in a manner that earns His pleasure. Ameen.

May Allah Almighty bless us with the companionship of those who are close to Him, allow us to benefit from their presence, wisdom, and guidance, and keep our hearts connected to those who remind us of Allah and the Hereafter. May Allah Almighty grant Qibla Hazrat Sahib excellent health, strength, and well-being, extend their life in His obedience and service, and increase manifold the barakah in their countless efforts for the Deen and the community. May Allah Almighty accept their efforts, grant them ease in all matters, and allow us to continue benefiting from their blessed presence and guidance for many years to come.

Ameen Ya Rabb-al’Alameen.
