Gorgonius was a Nicomedian and Christian officer in Diocletian's palace. Aided by colleague Dorotheus, he converted all the servants of the imperial palace. First to be tortured and put to death, his body was buried on the Latin Way in 303 then later moved to S. Peter's Basilica.

Little is known but he may be identified with an Eortius who took part in the council of Valencia (374).

In 1604 his name was added to the BCP kalendar from the York Breviary to distinguish the birthday of Queen Elizabeth I.
