*RULINGS RELATING TO QURBĀNĪ ACCORDING TO THE HANAFĪ MADHHAB*

*WHAT IS QURBĀNĪ?*

Qurbānī is the sacrifice made during the Days of Sacrifice (Ayyām-un-Nahr) from Fajr of 'Eid-ul-Adhā, 10th Dhul Hijjah until the sunset on 12th Dhul Hijjah. It is Mustahabb (recommended) to give Qurbānī on the first day.

*WHO MUST GIVE QURBĀNĪ?*

Qurbānī is Wājib (compulsory) upon every:

(1) sane,

(2) mature,

(3) Muslim,

(4) who is not a traveller,

(5) who owns wealth which reaches the Nisāb which is currently approximately £1167 in the UK,

(6) and who has reached the first Day of 'Eid-ul-Adhā.

A wife who fulfills the above conditions must pay for herself but children do not have to. If a man gives Qurbānī on behalf of his wife or his mature children then for it to count he must give it with their permission. Their Qurbānī will not be valid if he gives it without their permission.

*WHAT IS THE AGE OF RESPONSIBILITY?*

Girls and boys must give Qurbānī if they fulfill the above conditions and if they show signs of maturity. Every person aged 15 must give Qurbani if the above conditions are met regardless of showing signs of maturity or not because at 15 they are classed as mature Islāmically for commands and prohibitions of the Sharī'ah.

The age for maturity is calculated in Islāmic years. Bear in mind that Islāmic lunar years are approximately 10 days shorter than Christian solar years and this must be taken into account.

Hence if for example Zayd turned 15 on 10th July then Islamically he would have been 15 approximately 150 days before this on 10th February. This is a rough estimation. We should instead make make a note of our Islāmic birthday and work out our age in Islāmic years by this.

*WHAT MUST BE GIVEN FOR QURBANĪ?*

For Qurbānī it is Wājib (compulsory) to sacrifice one goat or sheep, or a seventh of a camel or cow. One goat or sheep counts for one person's obligation and one camel or cow counts for seven peoples' obligation.

*WHEN DOES ONE AVOID CLIPPING NAILS AND CUTTING HAIR?*

The Beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said,

"Whoever intends doing Qurbānī should avoid clipping his nails or cutting his hair for the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah." [Sunan an-Nasā'ī 4362]

This is Mustahabb (recommended) and not Wājib (compulsory) for the one who will be giving Qurbānī so if someone does clip nails or cut hair there will not be any wrongdoing and the Qurbānī will still be valid. After the Qurbānī has been given one may clip nails and cut hair.

*WHO IS QURBĀNĪ MEAT GIVEN TO?*

It is Mustahabb (recommended) though not Wājib (compulsory) to split one's Qurbānī into three parts and give one third to the poor as Sadaqah (charity), one third to one's relatives and one third for oneself and to eat the meat oneself and give some to one's wife and children. If one has a lot of children and a large family then all the meat can be kept for oneself and if one wishes it can give all be given as Sadaqah (charity). It is better to keep one part of it for oneself.

*WHEN IS DHUL HIJJAH?*

🌙 6 Fasts of Shawwal

Alhamdulillah, we have completed the blessed month of Ramaḍān. Let us continue our momentum of worship by observing the 6 fasts of Shawwal.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Whoever fasts Ramaḍān and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted the entire year."

📖 Sahih Muslim (1164)

🕌 Hanafi Perspective:

According to the Hanafi Madhab, fasting six days in Shawwal is mustaḥabb (recommended) and carries immense reward.

📌 Important Notes:

- These fasts can be kept anytime in Shawwal (after Eid day).
- It is better to complete qaḍā fasts first if you have any outstanding.
- The reward is equivalent to fasting the whole year (Ramaḍān = 10 months, Shawwal = 2 months).

🤲 May Allah accept our fasting and عبادات and grant us consistency.

آمین يا رب العالمين

Tips for sighting the moon on Thursday 19 March -
(1) LOCATE the moon using binoculars first
(2) Then look in the place you have spotted it with your naked eyes

You can also use Venus to help you.

“Please ensure the Sun has well and truly set before looking for the Moon, as accidentally viewing the Sun with your naked eye could damage your eyesight.

At around 20 minutes after sunset, the Moon sits 5° above the horizon. Venus should be visible at this time, 9° above and left of where the Moon should be; that’s a fraction smaller than the 10° width of your fist at arm’s length.

At 30 minutes after sunset, the Moon will be around 3.5° above the horizon, probably close to its visibility limit. If you do manage to view or photograph this Moon, well done.

You’ll have caught the Moon at just 17 hours old!“

Assalāmu ʿAlaykum wa Raḥmatullāhi wa Barakātuh,

Alḥamdulillāh, today we completed the dars of al-Khaṣā’iṣ aṣ-Ṣughrā by Imam Jalaluddin al‑Suyuti, which has been taking place after Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr during the blessed days of Ramaḍān.

Over these gatherings we had the honour of reflecting upon the unique virtues and special characteristics of our beloved Messenger ﷺ. These reminders increased our love, reverence and connection with the Prophet ﷺ during this sacred month.

As Eid is likely to fall on Friday or Saturday, this concludes our Ramaḍān dars series for this year. We pray that Allah ﷻ accepts this humble effort, allows the knowledge to benefit us, and grants us the ability to embody the noble character and sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Jazākumullāhu khayran to everyone who attended and participated. May Allah reward you abundantly and gather us again in gatherings of knowledge and remembrance.

May Allah accept all our fasting, prayers and acts of worship in these final days of Ramaḍān and allow us to reach Eid with forgiveness and mercy.

Āmīn.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Hafiz Jamshaid Sahib (Rahmatullahi Alayhi), the beloved Imam of Jamia Masjid Hanfia, Bradford. His return to Allah is a great loss not only for the congregation of the masjid but for the wider community who benefited from his knowledge, sincerity and lifelong service to the Qur’an.

Hafiz Jamshaid Sahib was widely known as an Ustaadh-ul-Huffāz, dedicating decades of his life to teaching the Qur’an and nurturing generations of students. Through his efforts, many young people memorised the Qur’an under his guidance. Countless Huffāz across Bradford and beyond carry forward the knowledge and discipline he instilled in them, making his teaching a lasting Sadaqah Jariyah that will continue to benefit him.

Those who knew him will remember his humility, dedication to the masjid, and his unwavering commitment to the service of Islam. His life was spent teaching the Book of Allah, guiding students and serving the community with sincerity and devotion.

We ask Allah ﷻ to grant Hafiz Jamshaid Sahib the highest ranks in Jannatul Firdaws, to accept his decades of service to the Qur’an, and to make every student he taught a means of ongoing reward for him. May Allah grant patience and strength to his family, his students and the entire community during this difficult time.

Janazah details will be confirmed soon, in shā’ Allāh. Please remember him in your duas.

20th Ramadan – Yaum Fattah Makkah (The Conquest of Makkah)

The 20th day of Ramadan marks the final day of the second Ashara (the Ashara of Forgiveness - Maghfirah) and brings with it one of the most remarkable events in Islamic history, Fath Makkah, the Conquest of the Blessed City of Makkah in the 8th year after Hijrah.

On this historic day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah with the believers. The very people who had persecuted him, forced him to leave his beloved city, and waged years of hostility against the Muslims now stood before him expecting retribution.

Yet the Prophet ﷺ chose mercy over revenge.

Addressing the people of Makkah, he said the same words spoken by Sayyiduna Yusuf عليه السلام to his brothers:

“There is no blame upon you today. Go, for you are all free.”

Through this extraordinary act of forgiveness, the Sacred City was restored to the pure worship of Allah alone, the monotheistic tradition established by Sayyiduna Ibrahim عليه السلام. The idols that had filled the Ka'bah were removed, and the House of Allah once again became a sanctuary of Tawheed.

As we complete the second Ashara of Ramadan, we reflect on the powerful lessons of this day, that true strength lies in forgiveness, humility, patience and reliance upon Allah.

May Allah allow us to enter the final Ashara of Ramadan with hearts full of sincerity, seeking His mercy, forgiveness and the blessings of Laylatul Qadr.

آمین يا رب العالمين
