"The heart of community" is the title a soon-to-be 9-year old Friend gave his creation at children's meeting today. It consists of a giant leaf, picked up on a walk yesterday by a children's meeting volunteer, that was decorated with colourful petals collected from the ground of our Meeting House garden.
Meanwhile, our monthly teenage meeting next door was discussing conscientious objection, while over 30 adults remained in the main meeting room, joined remotely by 3 other Friends on our big screen.
Incidentally, we were originally planning to hold a Meeting for Learning this afternoon on how to become a thriving community, but this was cancelled at short notice as we're too busy being one.

This coming weekend, our Quaker Meeting House is one of the venues for Bradford on Avon's first Kindness Festival. The new charity Kindwaves will be launched on Saturday, with various activities during the day. Saturday evening we'll be hosting a film screening about action against pollution, and on Sunday afternoon "The Hardest Bridge" will be on show, a film about the friendship between the 'Brighton bomber' and the daughter of one of the people who were killed in that bombing.

Bradford on Avon’s first Kindness Festival is taking place next weekend! ♥

Explore a variety of events including talks, films, music, wellbeing, the Forgiveness project, children’s events and more.

The weekend will also see the launch of new local charity Kindwaves who will be hosting activities throughout the day on Saturday at the Quaker Meeting House.

The festival launches at 5.30pm on Friday 13, at The Hub, where you will also find more information about the activities taking place over the weekend.

Quakers in Britain's call for immediate lifting of the proscription of Palestine Action is very close to our hearts here in Bradford on Avon Quaker Meeting where five Friends who were arrested for holding cardboard signs are now in some form of legal limbo following the High Court ruling.

We welcome the High Court's recognition that the proscription of Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act was unlawful. We call for the immediate lifting of the proscription order which remains in place.

This intervention from Quakers in Britain is particularly apt for Bradford on Avon Quakers. Last year, 5 local Friends were arrested for peacefully holding signs reading 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.' Their decisions to challenge the law in this way was not taken lightly, in one case being the main focus of a 4-day meditation retreat before taking action. Their experiences ranged from a quick one-hour tour through a custody suite before being released under investigation all the way to being held for 27 hours, having their home searched, being given harsh bail conditions and now awaiting a court date. For exactly the same kind of action with the same words.

Quakers in Britain have urged politicians to curb increasingly repressive protest laws, warning that recent and proposed legislation is preventing them from practising their faith.

Today we enjoyed our own version of Dickens' Scrooge story at a packed Quaker Meeting House. And over the forthcoming holidays, our Wednesday evening and Sunday morning Meetings continue as normal. In addition, we will be holding a Meeting for Worship from 10.30am until 11.15am on Thursday the 25th.

An interesting report from Zephyr, our region's Youth Development Worker. One of our local members also continues to be on Quakers in Britain's Reparations Working Group that is tasked with trying to work out how to make meaningful reparation for British Quakers' involvement in the enslavement of people.

This national initiative fits in well with our local support for Kindwaves, a new charity that promotes more kindness in schools and to get away from the all-too-often seen culture of punishment.

Educators and policy makers should mainstream peer mediation, Quakers in Britain says following the publication of a new national report showing its positive impact.

More good news (at least for the moment).

Quaker climate activist Marcus Decker has won his appeal against deportation, in a case that drew widespread support from Chris Packham, Quakers, and climate campaigners.
