Explore the history of St Michael’s Church

A church in Melksham which is nearly 900 years old is opening its doors for residents to explore historical pictures, items and records.

St Michael’s Church is a Grade II* listed building and is once again hosting Heritage Open Days from Saturday 12th to Tuesday 15th September.

The event will give visitors the chance to view historical pictures dating from the 1700s to recent times, research original parish records including baptisms, marriages and funerals from the late 1700s to modern times and talk to experts about the bells, tower clock and history of the church building.

Church vestments and communion vessels on the altar will also be on display.

This recognition reflects the care, commitment and high standards maintained at The Down Cemetery, and we’re delighted to see the hard work of our Cemetery Team recognised. Their commitment helps ensure it remains a peaceful, well-maintained place where families can remember and visit their loved ones.

We’d also like to thank the Friends of The Down Cemetery for their valued contribution to the upkeep and maintenance of The Down Cemetery.

As this is our first year entering, achieving Silver at the first attempt is a fantastic achievement. We’ll use the assessment feedback to continue improving, with our sights set on Gold next year.

Join us on Saturday 15th August as we come together at the club to honour and remember a true friend, teammate, and one of our very own, Phil Stone.

The club will be open from 12 noon, with kick-off scheduled for 2.30pm.

While the current state of the pitch means we are still finalising the exact format of the rugby on the day, the most important pieces of the puzzle are completely locked in. The referees are sorted, the teams are ready to go, and the spirit of the club is stronger than ever. No matter what the final run-out looks like on the grass, we are going to celebrate Phil the best way we know how—through rugby and community.

This is a day for the entire Melksham Rugby Club family, past and present. We need all of you to come down, pack the sidelines, and fill the clubhouse with the stories, laughter, and memories that made Phil such a massive part of our lives.

We are also incredibly proud to have Man Down UK on-site with us throughout the day. They are a fantastic non-profit community interest company providing free, confidential, peer-led talking groups for men experiencing mental health challenges. Having them here is a powerful reminder of how vital it is to look out for one another, both on and off the pitch.

We welcome the sentence handed to the funeral director in Hull and hope it provides some measure of justice for the families affected by his actions. Our thoughts remain with everyone impacted by these deeply distressing events.

This case should serve as a clear warning that bereaved families must never be failed by those entrusted with their loved ones' care. We urge the government to press ahead with regulating the funeral profession, ensuring every funeral provider meets the highest standards of care, compassion and accountability.

We at DJ Bewley belong to a trade organisation called SAIF.

To remain complaint- we must follow the UK Funeral Director Code and are subject to a programme of inspections covering our premises, mortuary facilities and administrative processes.

Families using a SAIF member also have access to an independent complaints process. This is delivered through an externally audited alternative dispute resolution body certified by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.
