As the vaccination rate accelerates and the UK gradually eases restrictions, the situation in India seem to deteriorate by the day. Covid cases and fatalities are increasing rapidly with seemingly no discrimination – the young and healthy are being struck, as well as the older and clinically vulnerable.

This has left many as widows and orphans. The government has had no choice but insist on total lockdowns in several states. Schools have already been closed for the best part of a year, and all shops and businesses have to shut. The lockdown here in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India has made several thousands redundant, without income.

The government is trying its best to control the spread of the virus and is also extending social and economical support.

Last year NM India offered help, in the form of food parcels and essential supplies to nearly 700 people in Orissa and Tamil Nadu.
This year we feel burdened to step in again and extend support to 1000 families at the rate of Rs500 (£6) per family to supply basic essentials for a week or Rs1000 (£12) for two weeks.

In the midst of this strange and challenging season of life Jesus is still King and he calls us to compassion, grace and truth in word and deed to the communities we interact with. May we grow as a community towards true justice and equality for all people made in the image of God.
