St Ambrose, Westbourne, Bournemouth

St Ambrose, Westbourne, Bournemouth The Parish Church of Westbourne, Bournemouth. The present site, at the top of Alum Chine, was the gift of Mr Cooper Dean.

From early meetings in Middle Road and Seamoor House, through a temporary structure while a mission church (now Alumhurst Day Centre) was built, to the present parish church that celebrated its centenary with the millennium, St Ambrose has been at the spiritual heart of Westbourne. The 15th century Perpendicular design was by Charles Hodgson Fowler, then consulting architect to Durham Cathedral, w

ith reredos and font cover by Temple Moore. The foundation stone was laid on 20th October, 1898, by Mrs Abel Smith (wife of the local MP). Messrs Bowman of Stamford were the builders. The church was dedicated on 10th October, 1900, by Rt Rev Randall Davidson GCVO, PC, Bishop of Wi******er. Eleven days later the saintly Dr Edward King (now commemorated in the Church of England's lectionary) preached in St Ambrose' Church on the text: "In this place will I give peace." With the tower completed and the debt paid off the church was Consecrated by Dr E H Ryle, Bishop of Wi******er, on 14th May, 1907. The district was gazetted as a separate parish in October, 1921, and the first separate Parish Magazine appeared in April, 1922. The freehold Vicarage was built behind the church, without aid from the Diocese, designed by Reynolds & Tomlins to a detailed specification by the PCC, and built by F H***e & Sons in 1929.

St Ambrose was greatly blessed today, with Fr Dave Talbot concelebrating and preaching AND a triple Baptism! Siblings Jennifer, Ruby and Noah - following their parents' example - all received the sacrament of Holy Baptism from the Vicar, Fr Adrian Pearce, and generously shared a large cake and flutes of Buck's Fizz with the congregation after the service. We also sang Happy Birthday to Lucy, whose birthday it had been on Friday.

This morning's Mass marked the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth (translated from yesterday which was Trinity Sunday).

The feast is of Mediaeval origin: Pope Urban IV inserted it into the calendar in 1389 to be kept on 2nd July (as it is in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer). The 1969 revision of the Roman calendar moved it to 31st May, between the "Annunciation of the Lord (25th March) and that of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (24th June), so that it would harmonize better with the Gospel story" and the Church of England's Common Worship Lectionary followed suit.

Some traditionalist Roman and Lutheran churches have retained the old date, particularly in Germany and Slovakia. If you wish to "hedge your bets" the Society of Mary's Rosary and Mass on 4th July (10 a.m.) will also commemorate the Visitation - all welcome. The Visitation is also the second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the only saint to have her own colour (blue, where available). How appropriate that last night's Full Moon was a Blue Moon! 🔵

Andrew West (whom you may recall as Organist of St Katharine's Church, Southbourne) writes:
"It’s exactly one month to go until my ordination at Wi******er Cathedral! Whether church is a familiar place for you or not, anyone can attend if you would like to come and support me. It will mark the beginning of my ministry as Assistant Curate at Bournemouth Town Centre Parish. We shall be moving to Bournemouth at the beginning of June as part of my ministry."
