Dedicated to St Peter, the church is situated just over the brow of the Quarry Hills overlooking the Weald, as are the neighbouring churches of Linton, Chart Sutton and Sutton Valence. St Peter’s Church is a Grade II* listed building. It has been suggested that such churches were built on the site of old Roman temples which were placed in prominent places. This idea could tie in with a more feasib
le explanation of their position – that they were adjacent to ancient trackways. It is generally accepted that there was an old track running along the crest of the hills, roughly parallel to and between Heath Road and the Church and there is a footpath that follows this route today. The following description contains information about the Church building, the construction of the floors, stonework and tower. The bells were extensively restored in the early 1990′s. The oldest of the 6 bells is over 400 years old, and the history of each along withtechnical details of each bell is included. The Churchyard, with spectacular views over The Weald, has much of interest to offer. Tombs from the 17th Century to the present day and a magnificent wisteria that blooms in early June. The Lychgate dates from the 15th Century and is Grade II* listed. Inside the Church, many memorials can be found including a number ofpaintings. A number of stained glass windows, including the unique Millenium Window have been added over the period since the 19th Century to the present day.
