As we begin Chanukah this evening, we are all in shock at the horrific news from Sydney this morning. A mass shooting at a Chanukah celebration at Bondi Beach has left multiple people dead and many more injured. Our hearts break for those in Australia who gathered to celebrate Chanukah and instead experienced unimaginable terror and loss.
At this moment, we stand in solidarity with the Jewish community of Sydney. We grieve with them, and we pray for the victims, for the injured to have a full recovery, and for comfort for those who mourn.
During Chanukah, we kindle lights to proclaim the miracle and to push back against darkness. Tonight, as we light our menorahs, we do so with heavy hearts but also with resolve. The message of Chanukah endures - that light will always overcome darkness, that hope persists even in our darkest moments, and that the Jewish people will continue to celebrate our traditions together.
The CST continues to work closely with police, government and community partners to protect Jewish life in this country, including discussions this morning to increase security and policing for Chanukah events in the UK over the next eight days. We are grateful for their continued vigilance and support.
At times like these, it's more important than ever that we look after one another. We know that many of you have family and friends in Australia, and we are here to support you. Please check in with your friends and neighbours. If you're struggling with what's happened, you're not alone. Please reach out to our Rabbinic team or to Karen, our Care Coordinator.
May God give strength to His people and bless His people, Israel, with peace.
Chanukah Sameach,
The BES Rabbinic and HO Team
