Today we live in a world where ‘being on time’ is part and parcel of our daily lives. But in the days when the fastest form of transport was a horse and most people didn’t travel further than the next village, being on time wasn’t an issue. That all changed two hundred years ago with coming of the train. Now lots of people could all travel at the same time and suddenly being on time became important. With the trains came timetables and with timetables the need for a recognized reference point from which to start – hence Greenwich Mean Time. Now everyone could know when to be in the right place at the right time in order to catch that train and not be left behind!

The Bible tells us that Jesus appeared at just the right time. Perhaps it was the right time because Roman roads meant good news could easily travel far and wide. In Mark’s Gospel Jesus’ opening words are, ‘The time has come, the Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the Good News’. There might not have been any trains to catch back then but the urgency was the same. Now is the time! Today is the day to get on board with Jesus!
