On Sunday in church, we were privileged to be visited by someone from a charity called “Christians Against Poverty”. It was set up to help those who struggle with life, and in particular debt, which is one of their main areas of work. They assist people who find themselves in situations that mean they struggle with their own finances. Sometimes this happens through the loss of a job or even the break-up of a relationship. Whatever the reason, many people find themselves in debt through no fault of their own, and because of ignorance or fear they do not know where to turn for help and assistance. Christians Against Poverty have recognised this need and over a number of years they have sought to fulfil that need with the services they offer – and this has arisen through the love they have for the community; a love that Jesus Christ demonstrated during his earthly ministry - and we are called to follow his ways.

There are, of course, other organisations that are there to help with similar situations, not least Good Neighbour Schemes that can help with the completion of forms etc. I know I have made the point before, but it is important that we care for those around us, and as our speaker reminded us on Sunday, sometimes that will take us to places where we are uncomfortable. It may also mean we will have to listen rather than talk to the person we are helping. We are encouraged to talk, rather than keep silent, when life is troubling us – like the old adage, “a problem shared is a problem halved”. A good way to talk is to pray, and perhaps have someone to pray with rather than on your own. If you want to pray, talk, or share what you are going through at the moment, then please contact me or someone in one of our churches. At the bottom of the page I have provided the link to Christians Against Poverty.

How often do we hear the words that it is too hot on a Bank Holiday? I certainly can’t remember the last time I said it, but it was rather hot on Bank Holiday Monday this week, and it is set to continue all through the school holiday – most unusual. Also, we appear to be breaking records for the highest temperatures in May; again very unusual. We often complain about the weather, but rarely because it is too hot and sunny. It is perhaps not a good time of the year for it to be so hot and dry as the cereal crops are beginning to firm up ready for the harvest later in the year. It is what it is, but what can we do about it?

We hear about global warming and the way it is changing our planet; is there anything we can do to at least slow down the process? We might, for example, try to cut down on carbon emissions and be more aware of what we do and how we do it so that the damage to our planet is minimal - rather than show no concern for its resources and be careless in our actions.

For the brief time we are here, we have been entrusted with the management of God’s earth and all that it offers us in the way of resources to maintain life. I hope that we can do our best to maintain what we have been given, give thanks to God for its provision, and when the season of harvest arrives, we will be able to celebrate with joyous and thankful hearts for the continuing seasons. As we read in the book of Genesis; “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.’

I never cease to marvel at God’s creation, and while we focus our thoughts on the beauty of what we see around us in nature – the animals, birds and the floral beauty – we should also be aware our bodies are also amazing structures that are capable of keeping going, even under difficult and pressurised situations. We know all too well that occasionally they become unwell and parts wear out and fail. However the extent of knowledge regarding being able to find the causes of problems and put them right is growing all of the time. Research is proving to be invaluable and is often funded by charitable giving by the person in the street - I make it my policy to give to a charity that carries out medical research, perhaps you do too.

Although we are learning all of the time, and research is progressing at a fast rate, obviously there is a lot more we need to discover in order to combat the number of diseases and conditions we know very little about, and therefore struggle to fight with the right medicines and treatments. I’m not saying that God’s creation of humankind is flawed, but through our lifestyles we sometimes neglect our human bodies and their needs. Part of the lifestyle we should adopt is to keep in touch with the maker. This coming weekend we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples in the upper room - known as Pentecost, because it is celebrated fifty days after Easter. The Holy Spirit is given to us by God, so that we have a guide to help us deal with situations, as well as empowering us to carry out God’s mission of spreading the Good News about Jesus. We would do well to listen to God’s guidance in all things, so we can live our lives as he wanted us to.

One of the privileges of being Rural Dean for the Biggleswade Deanery is that I get to travel around the 19 different parishes (4 of which are our own Benefice) and speak to the people who worship and look after the church in their particular parish. To spend time with those people; listen to their woes and their joys, is an honour. Sometimes it is difficult to fit those meetings into a busy schedule, but it is important that I do find the time to make a visit to each church over the summer months.

Some of these issues we face in society are to do with the well-being of people, and there are many examples where people who are struggling with life do not or cannot find a person to share their difficulties with so that they can find support and encouragement. We are encouraged by different agencies to find time to talk about those things that are causing us difficulties. I often wonder how many tragedies might have been avoided if there could have been someone to talk to, and unload their worries and concerns. This morning there was a case on television where the coach of a prominent women’s football team had taken his own life, when on the outside everything seemed successful and rosy.

As we journey along life’s path, we encounter many difficulties and tricky situations; and to have the option to share with someone is important as a release to the tensions that exist. Equally it is important to spend time in prayer – to find a quiet space in your busy diary – and share your cares and concerns with God. Some people regard having a faith as a crutch, but for many it is being able to share with and have trust in, a God who cares and loves each and every one of us.
