The film "Marvellous" will be showing at Stanton Drew Village Hall on Friday 9th May at 7:00pm. "Marvellous" is the BBC BAFTA award winning film featuring the actor Toby Jones who portrays the life of Neil Baldwin, B.E.M otherwise known as "Nello". Neil overcame learning difficulties to work as "Nello" the clown before becoming Lou Macari's kit man for Stoke City Football Club; Lou described Neil as his best ever signing. Neil also worked voluntarily for over 50 years at Keel University helping students adjust to university life; he formed his own student football team with Kevin Keegan as president and they played against an all-star side of former Football League players including Lou Macari, Asa Hartford and Gordon Cowans. Neil was made a freeman of the City of Stoke and Newcastle-under Lyme in 2015, he has a very positive and inspirational outlook on life showing what can be achieved with a bit of determination, kindness and faith. Neil will be with us for the film and will share a little of his life story with us. Tickets are £5 on the door and there will be Popcorn, Ice creams, tea, coffee and a bar.
On Saturday 10th May at 8.30am, Neil is our guest speaker at the Men's Breakfast which will be prepared by our excellent Chef Paul Munday. Come with a good appetite but please let me know of any special dietary requirements and if you’ll be joining us no later than Wednesday 7th May. The cost of the breakfast is £10.00 paid at the door which will be open from around 8:15am.
Please invite friends and neighbours and publicise where you can. Neil's book will be on sale at both events price £8.99 and all proceeds from the weekend will go to the Lou Macari foundation to help the homeless in Bristol. Neil has many followers in his fan club including royalty and bishops so who knows who is going to turn up for the weekend! The play "Marvellous" that was performed in London's West End in 2022 will be coming to Bristol in 2026. I look forward to seeing you on the 9th and 10th.
God bless,
Dave

Interesting teaching on how Jesus taught us to treat each other. This passage comes soon after the beatitudes where, amongst other things, the golden rule is laid out.

It's deep wisdom that would be wise whether you believe in any god or none.

August Newsletter
As we enter August many of you will be taking summer holidays, a time to rest and be refreshed. A day of rest was the first thing that Adam and Eve did which establishes the principle that work should come out of rest and not rest come out of work; however, many work 50 weeks a year to enjoy a 2 week holiday for a time of rest and restoration. Restoration sounds like a combination of “rest” and “oration”- something to do with resting and talking but it comes from the Greek apokathistemi, apo meaning “of or from” and kathistemi meaning “to set in order” - to get our lives back into order. That’s the reason for holidays, a word that comes come from “holy days”. The words of the hymn “Dear Lord and Father of mankind” come to mind: “Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace” to counter the stress and strain of life today.
The letter to the Hebrews talks of entering into His rest; this is not about putting your feet up on a Sunday to keep the 4th commandment that God gave to Moses to remind us that in six days He made the heavens and the earth and rested on the seventh day. The sabbath was a weekly reminder to the children of Israel that it is God who makes them holy (Exodus 31:13) and that this is not achieved by works but through a relationship with Him. Entering into this rest is through salvation where our lives are set in order, being born again by faith in Jesus and what He accomplished on the cross to restore ongoing uninterrupted fellowship with God. Have you entered into this rest? “Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of Thy peace”.
God bless and have a great holiday!

A tribute to Simon
Many of you will have known Simon who grew up in the village these past 30 years and tragically died recently. Simon had a good and caring heart that was demonstrated in his unique character, enthusiasm and wit but suffered like many of us to addiction. TV, work, exercise, shopping, junk food, chocolate, po*******hy, social media, gambling, smoking, alcohol and drugs are just a few of the addictions that can take control of people’s lives today and if you are suffering please seek help. There are many accounts of people being set free from their addictions but sadly not in Simon’s case.
Simon grew some black potatoes with us last year and somewhere that crop will be multiplying… they looked disgusting but tasted delicious… don’t judge something by the outward appearance, God looks at the heart! (1 Samuel 16:7). Shortly before Christmas we returned home to find a pile of globe artichokes on our doorstep… "The generous soul will be made rich" (Proverbs 11:25). And in the spring time Simon left us some Black Aspen saplings that were being discarded that he didn’t want to see go to waste. They are now growing in the hedge that runs along the footpath between Church Lane and Parkfield Gardens as a fitting memory of his care for the environment, along with the tadpoles at the recreation ground.
Simon was working his way through the book of Proverbs that I referred to in the August 2022 edition of the Village Magazine. In his Bible I found a marker in Proverbs 18, I wonder which particular verses he was focusing on in that chapter? Maybe verse 10 "The Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and they are saved".
Our thoughts and prayers are with Simon’s family and friends for God's comfort, strength and peace through this difficult time and for all who are suffering addiction to be set free.

The coronation of King Charles III was a magnificent display of pageantry that may be a once in a lifetime experience for many of us with a rare outing of the crown jewels from the safety of the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey. The St. Edward’s Crown used in the coronation ceremony to crown the king is valued around £40 million but this was exchanged with the Imperial State Crown with a value of around £4 billion before King Charles III left the Abbey.
The sceptre and rod presented to the king symbolise the authority and pastoral care of the monarch for his people. Our sceptre upholds the cross on top of the most precious diamond in the world, the Cullinan 1 valued around £400 million. The sceptre reminds us that God’s laws should be the laws of this land and symbolises the prophetic words of Joseph to his sons of the coming Messiah, Jesus (Genesis 49:10):
“The sceptre will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until He to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be His”.
The rod represents a club used by shepherds to fight wild animals and keep the flock on good pasture whilst the dove at the top of the rod symbolises the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us as in Psalm 23:4:
“You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me”.
Amongst all the gold and precious jewels, did you notice at the beginning of the coronation ceremony, King Charles III was presented with the most valuable thing the world affords… a Bible! I wonder if he is keeping it safely along with the rest of the crown jewels in the Tower of London? Psalm 119:11 tells us where we should keep our Bibles safely:
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you”.
God bless,

May Newsletter
We are just back from a week in Hong Kong over Easter where we were invited to lead worship at a conference on deliverance. It was an amazing week, on the last day of the conference, a planned 45 minutes of worship turned into 4 hours of praise and worship with many being set free into the glorious liberty of the children of God (Romans 8:21). This is what we pray in the Lord’s prayer “Thy kingdom come”. My fingers were getting pretty raw after 2 hours of playing the guitar, so some wonderful Chinese folk took over. 3,000 years ago King David established praise and worship at the centre of the nation of Israel with a team of 4,000 musicians to maintain praise and worship 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Psalm 134 was written to encourage musicians working the night-shift to “Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who stand by night in the house of the Lord! Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord!” How the nation prospered with the worship of God at the centre of all activities. King Henry VI had the same intent in establishing King’s College Cambridge in 1441 that the worship of God would be at the centre of our nation.
Jesus told the Samaritan woman “ But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24). There are a number of words for worship in the Bible meaning to revere, honour and serve but the one we love is proskuneo meaning to draw near and embrace, rather like a child running into their parent’s loving arms… to love God with all our heart, mind soul and strength and love one another as Jesus loves us. If we could all do this, what a transformation we would see in our nation like King David.
God bless,
