Escomb Saxon Church

Escomb Saxon Church Escomb Saxon Church is one of the most complete Saxon Churches in Europe and was built around 675 AD. Church Warden – Mrs. Gill Beddow
Church Warden – Mr.

One of the most complete Saxon churches in the UK, Escomb Saxon Church has been a place of worship since approximately 670 AD. The building materials that make up the church go back a lot further, though; many were taken from the old Roman fort at Binchester, and Roman INSCRIPTIONS can be seen on many of the stones used in the construction of the church. The church is located in a lovely, shaded g

reen, in the centre of Escomb village, 1 1/2 miles from Bishop Auckland. It is not known for certain when the church was begun, but architectural evidence points to sometime between 670 and 690 AD. This would make it one of the first Northumbrian Christian churches to be built. The church is one of five parishes grouped with Etherley, Hamsterley and Witton le Wear. SERVICES
1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays 11.00am
5th Sunday – a joint service in one of the five parish churches

Our bible readings this week are, as ever, full of both challenge and joy. The joy of the promise of God's closeness to us. The challenge of living as God wills us - with God's character of generosity, self-sacrifice, and love.
Our gospel reading contains the parable of the Good Samaritan - a man who put himself in harm's way, and made significant sacrifice, to help a total stranger, from a culture that was hostile to his own. A story told as an example of what it means to love God and neighbour wholeheartedly.
A challenge to think about how a perhaps familiar faith, is actually counter-cultural in any culture, because of our instinct to self-preservation. Perhaps particularly counter-cultural in the Western world, with the high value that we place on individual freedoms.
Come, ponder, bring God your love, and allow God's love to transform you, and so our world.
At 4pm at Escomb Saxon Church we have our monthly Celtic Communion service. This month as we approach what for many is holiday season, we're exploring the concept of Sacred Rest.

This Sunday is a very special one for our parishes. Rev Mel, our curate, is celebrating communion for the first time.
She will be ordained priest at Durham cathedral on Saturday, then come home to the communities she loves and serves, to preside at communion on Sunday.
For this reason, we're having a joint service, for all four parishes, starting at 10:30am at St Cuthbert's Church Etherley. There is a bring and share lunch afterwards.
(No services at Escomb, Witton le Wear or Hamsterley)
Do come and join the celebration.

This Sunday in the church's year, across many denominations, is Trinity Sunday. A 'minor festival' - a time to celebrate a particular aspect of our faith.
The Trinity is a beautiful mystery. A dynamic, constant relationship. A dance if you will, full of life, of communication, of sharing. A relationship in whose image all creation was made. A relationship we are called to live within.

Come explore this great and beautiful mystery together.

10:30 St James Hamsterley, Holy Communion
11am St's Philip and James, Witton le Wear, Cafe Church

In the Celtic tradition, the wild goose, rather than a dove, is the symbol of the Holy Spirit - migratory, powerful, communal and wise. Come explore more of this insight at our Celtic service.

Even if you only had half an eye on the news of late, it would be understandable if you felt fearful for where we're headed. What to do in the face of immense change, threat, injustice, destruction? This week our bible readings show us that the answer to this question is love. Far from being a soft option, or burying one's head in the ground, to head into love, soak up love, reach out in love is a bold, and transformative thing to do.
But human love will always falter. Our own strength has its limits. God's has not. Jesus shows us this in the life He lived and the fact that even death couldn't stop Him. This is the love that caused his followers, such as Paul, to continue sharing the good news of Jesus, despite threat to his own life. And disciples like Mary to be so floored by His love as to fall at His feet in worship and adoration.
This is the love that drives out fear. Really drives it out. Leads us into hope where there seems to be none. To action where we feel defeated. To love others where there is no human love.
Come, lets explore that love together. It is for all.

Good morning all,
Worship in your Anglican churches this Sunday:

Is wonderfully simple! As it's a 5th Sunday, we are all gathering in one place.
Mothering Sunday Service, 11am, St Philip & St James Church Witton le Wear

While Mother's Day is a wonderful celebration of Mums of all kinds, Mothering Sunday is broader than that. It's a celebration of Mother Church. Of the fact that as a community, we are called and gifted to mother each other, following Jesus' character. Jesus likened himself to a mother hen. Protective, providing, and fierce when they need to be. We're called to follow his example. To be a motherly community.
And that's everyone - whether or not we have children, still have or know our mother, and whatever s*x or gender we are.
Come, celebrate, seek the motherly love of God, and share it with each other. And go home with some daffodils!

This second Sunday in Lent we're focussing on what Lent is really about - not so much a season for dieting or personal improvement, but a time for opening our hearts and welcoming Christ's influence. Imitating Jesus. It's as easy to get distracted from this by following religious practices, as it is by things we might think of as 'temptations'. What might you do to help you to imitate Jesus?

Image: Jesus weeping over Jerusalem. Jesus looked on the city and wept, because the leaders focussed on the fact he didn't follow religious rules, and ignored his message of welcome into God's family for all.

Happy Pancake day everyone. I hope you enjoy a feast tonight.
This means it's Ash Wednesday tomorrow: the start of Lent. A time for reflecting, being open to God, being willing to be vulnerable and letting God shine light on the dark parts of our lives, and our worlds. A time for listening to God's loving challenges. God's calling to us.

Tomorrow night (Weds 5th March) at 7pm there is an Ash Wednesday service at St Cuthbert's Church Etherley.

Everyone is welcome. It's a time to reflect. We symbolically receive a smudge of ash on our forehead, as a symbol of repentance, cleansing, and of hope. Of endings, and new beginnings. We're having communion - a sign of new life, through self-sacrifice.
Come, start a Lenten journey.
