Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. January 6th.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Epiphany, the day when the Magi visited the Christ Child in Bethlehem and welcomed his arrival into the world with precious gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. As the 'diary' returns today, let us together, welcome afresh the love of Jesus into our lives and hearts and lay before him our desire to worship and faithfully serve him throughout all the days of our lives.

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 24th.

As we reflect once again upon Mary and Joseph making their long, lonely journey to Bethlehem, a journey that would end with the birth of their Son and our Saviour, we pray for our troubled world. We pray for peace. We pray for the lost and lonely, the sick and the suffering. We pray that the light of Christ may break into the darkness and that his love will radiate hope and peace into hearts, minds and homes across the world. And may I send a loving greeting to all those who read this diary and follow it day by day, and wish you all a happy Christmas filled with the love of Jesus. The diary will be taking a rest now until Monday, January 6th. God bless.

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 23rd. In today's Gospel reading from Luke I:57-66 there is one phrase that caught my attention, '....and they shared her joy.' This refers to Elizabeth upon the birth of John and after so many years of waiting her joy would know no bounds. The words leapt out at me, though, because yesterday was a very special day for us as a family, for our daughter and two sons, their partners and our youngest granddaughter shared the joy of meeting together for a meal and Christmas celebration. Over the years as the family has grown it has become increasingly difficult to meet up, so the shared love and laughter, reminiscences and updating of news was a very special time. Thank you Lord for the gift of family and the joy they bring. Amen

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 20th.

I stopped in my tracks the other day as I was coming into our house when I spotted something that surprised me. Beneath the ledge of the step there is one tiny purple flower sheltered by a large flowerpot. Arriving home after a busy day and feeling tired and somewhat battered by the wild, winter winds and rain, that little flower, unexpectedly, lifted my spirits and made me smile. As I reflected on this small moment in the day, once again I became aware that it is so often the small unexpected things in life that can lift our mood and help us through busy, difficult or sad days: a smile, a kind word, a thoughtful action, even a tiny, purple flower!

In the busyness of these days of Advent, Emmanuel, come to us. As presents are wrapped and cards are written, Emmanuel, come to us. As food is prepared and tables set, Emmanuel, come to us. As candles flicker and choirs sing, Emmanuel, come to us. As hearts are warmed by the Holy Child, The King of kings and Lord of lords, O come to us, Our Lord Emmanuel. Amen. (Written by Jenny Child)

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 18th.

I recently watched a wonderful Countryfile programme in which the actress Judi Dench and cameraman Hamza Yassin went to watch for eagles in flight. Their patience was rewarded and Judi fulfilled a lifetime's ambition. I was reminded of a very special time when visiting a friend on the Isle of Skye when we went a long and arduous uphill walk but were rewarded by the wonderful sight of several eagles in flight. Sometimes our journey of faith seems long and hard and we grow weary but Isaiah 40:31 offers words of encouragement: '...those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.'

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 17th.

A programme broadcast on the radio in 1946 was led by two people: a Provost of Coventry Cathedral and a Pastor of a church in Hamburg, Germany. Both of these churches were bombed and destroyed in World War II, yet amid the ruins of these two places of worship the two men were able to speak out in faith about reconciliation and forgiveness. Forgiveness was at the heart of the life and ministry of Jesus, yet I am saddened that there seems so little being exercised around the world and within the Church today. I am aware of the importance of seeking out the truth of given situations and the need for reconciliation, but, as followers of Jesus we are called to forgive, '...not seven times, but seventy times seven.' (Matthew 18:21-22) Lord, with compassion and understanding help me to offer love and forgiveness into a hurting world. Amen.

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 16th.

Yesterday's Old Testament reading from Zephaniah 3 which invited us to 'Sing... be glad and rejoice with all our heart' took my mind back to the day before when I had attended the coffee morning at our Church. As an extra treat, a group of children who belong to a singing group called the Stamp Choir, came to entertain us with some of their Christmas repertoire. And my goodness, did they sing with so much enthusiasm and sheer joy! I, for one, went home, afterwards with my heart uplifted and a new spring in my step. Lord, help us to sing out your message of joy and thanksgiving as we prepare to celebrate your gift of love to us, that of your Son and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Diary of a Cross in my Pocket. December 13th.

Today, a prayer from Joyce Huggett's book, 'Joy to the World.' Faithful God, this Christmas as I sing the familiar carols, hear the familiar readings and ponder familiar mysteries, grant me the grace of pure worship - that ability Mary had of attributing to you your worth and your inestimable greatness. Teach me reverence. Restore to me the ability to express the love for you that burns deep down in my heart. Your goodness to me is so great. You are light in my darkness, hope in my despair, strength in my weakness, the shelter in life's storms and Yes - My Saviour.
