The summer may nearly be over, but there is plenty to look forward to at St Matthew's this autumn. We are particularly excited about our Harvest Festival service on Sunday 4th October. If you haven't been to church in a while, why not put the date in the diary - we will be collecting food for our local food bank, and there will be a bring and share lunch afterwards. All are welcome 🍂🍁🥮

In light of the ongoing flooding in our parish, the following letter has been sent to Paulette Hamilton MP, Ayoub Khan MP, Cllr Graham Green, Cllr Martin McAuley, Cllr James Hinton, and Cllr Morriam Jan.

Dear all,

As the Vicar of St Matthew’s Church, Perry Beeches, I am writing to you on behalf of the Parochial Church Council and wider congregation to draw your attention to the serious flooding that has recently affected our parish.

There has been exceptionally heavy rainfall across Birmingham since the evening of 26th August 2026, resulting in significant flooding, particularly here in the Great Barr area. Members of our congregation have experienced flooding in their homes, causing significant damage, disruption, and personal distress. There has also been serious flooding on the roads surrounding our church, causing vehicles to be stranded and other significant disruption to local residents.

One contributing factor appears to be blocked or overwhelmed drains. We understand that the maintenance of the drainage infrastructure is the responsibility of Birmingham City Council, and so I would be grateful if you could raise this matter urgently and ask that the relevant drains are inspected and cleared where necessary to avoid further flooding. I would also be grateful if consideration could be given to any other preventative work that may be required to reduce the risk of similar flooding in the future.

As an active place of worship and community centre at the heart of the Beeches estate, we at St Matthew’s remain committed to the safety and wellbeing of all who live and work within our parish. I therefore hope that you will be able to respond to this letter at your earliest convenience to let me know what action is being taken to address this problem in our parish.

Yours sincerely,

Father George Reeves
on behalf of the Parochial Church Council of St Matthew’s, Perry Beeches

We had a great time at Messy Church this summer learning about different saints through crafts, stories, and some tasty activities! Thank you to everyone who came along and to all our hard-working volunteers.

Next Sunday (30th August) we will be joined by The Revd Amy Tan, who will be our guest preacher and celebrant at the 10am Parish Mass. Amy was the first Chinese-Malaysian woman to be ordained in the Church of England, and is a priest in the Diocese of Birmingham currently serving on a placement in Asia. Prior to ordination, she worked as a professional singer, songwriter, and musician. We are looking forward to welcoming her to St Matthew's 🙌
