Christ Church Selly Park

Christ Church Selly Park Christ Church is a community of people in South Birmingham who are growing in our faith as Christians and seeking to let Jesus transform our lives.

Christ Church serves an Anglican parish in Selly Park, south Birmingham. We are people with a wide range of ages, backgrounds and life experiences. Christ Church is a lively place, where people of many different backgrounds feel at home. Our services are informal in style, and are complemented by a wide range of youth, children's and midweek activities. We moved into a bright, new, modern building

early in 2008. In addition to church activities, the building is used by the Scouts and Guides and is also available for the whole community to use throughout the week.

It's always a special time when the Birmingham Half-Marathon comes past our building, and this year's event didn't disappoint. We provided refreshments and lots of applause, and the wonderful Second City Sax were here once again to help everything go with a swing, but it would be nothing without the runners. We got a fleeting glance of Bishop Michael (he is very fast!) and everyone among the spectators seemed to have someone to look out for. Thanks and congratulations to everyone who took part.

Running is very much on our minds at the moment as we look forward to supporting the Birmingham Half-Marathon on Sunday morning. The race comes past our building and as always we'll be providing refreshments and toilet facilities for runners and spectators alike. We expect the race leaders to come past soon after 9 and the crowds will really build up for a couple of hours after that. Come along and enjoy the atmosphere!

And now here's news of another way of running for a good cause... starting on Sunday 10 May, a guided Couch to 5k (or 2k if you prefer) to raise funds for our wonderful friends at Amani Centre for Street Children based in Moshi, Tanzania. All the details are in the images - contact us if you want to find out more.

It is with great sadness that we pass on news of the death of Walter Toro, Bishop of Bolivia. Walter, along with his wife Adela, had become a great friend of Christ Church over the years, having visited here several times and also generously hosting teams from Birmingham who visited Bolivia and especially his home city of Tarija. We will never forget his example of service, gentle humility, patience, vision and steadfast faith even through times of great difficulty. We pray for his family and the church he leaves behind, for comfort and strength in the days ahead.

"With firm faith in Jesus Christ and hope in the resurrection, the Anglican Episcopal Church of Bolivia informs that our beloved Diocesan Bishop, Walter Toro Martinez, has departed to the Presence of the Lord.

We thank God for his life dedicated to the service of the Gospel, for his love-filled pastoral ministry and for his faithful testimony to the care of God's People.

We trust in the eternal promise of the Lord and believe that he now rests in God’s glorious presence, partaking in eternal life prepared for his faithful servants.

We lift up our prayers that our Lord Jesus Christ may receive him in His eternal glory, and we ask the Holy Spirit to grant comfort, peace and strength to his family, the clergy, all congregations of the Anglican Episcopal Church of Bolivia and their friends and loved ones.

We hold fast in the hope of the Risen Lord, proclaiming that death has been defeated and that in Christ we have eternal life.
In the peace and hope of Christ.

“I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” John 11:25-26

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Happy Easter from Christ Church! Those who arrived early enough for our Sunday morning celebration had the opportunity to add some flowers to the cross in front of the building, while those who didn't were able to admire it - and we're all so grateful for the team who organised it all. As a bonus, the Easter garden made by the Toddler Group was on display in the very sunny entrance hall.

If you've passed our building in recent months you may have noticed that the cross by the roadside has been removed (the wood was rotting, and we are working on plans for something more permanent). However, our crack construction team has put up a temporary replacement in time for Easter so that we can, as in previous years, decorate it with flowers to celebrate the new life that Jesus brings. Anyone's welcome to come along at about 10.10 on Easter morning to help!

Of course you're also welcome to join in our Good Friday and Easter Sunday services, both intended for all ages, at 10.30 am on each day. There's also an opportunity to celebrate the Resurrection at sunrise on Easter morning. Tip: wrap up warm!

We end this season of Warm Welcome Friday with a special social event to which everyone's invited! There will be some Easter themed all age input from our highly creative Explore team, plus extra entertainment as well as the usual meal, conversation and refreshments that happen each week. A reminder to be there by 5.30 if you want to join in the meal. Thank you to everyone who has attended any of our Warm Welcome sessions over the past few months, and especially to our amazing team of helpers.

Two of our guests at last Friday's Warm Welcome brought along a special treat for everyone to share: a cake celebrating the Persian New Year. It's a powerful reminder of how connected we all are in today's world. There are no "faraway countries" any more and, through those close to us, we share in the joy and suffering of real people caught up in the storm.

We had two great Toddler Group sessions celebrating World Book Day! The theme was the Gingerbread Man and there were lots of activities relating to the character and the story. Everyone made a decorated biscuit to take home and some of the costumes worn included Harry Potter, a dragon and a unicorn. Thank you to Cath for her amazing organisation and hard work, and to everyone who came along and joined in the fun!

We love books at Toddler Group but even more so with World Book Day coming up this week! We'll be celebrating at both the Monday and Thursday sessions (10 to 11.30 am) and children are invited to come dressed as a book character, or to make use of our extensive range of dressing-up clothes. If you want to keep up with Toddler Group activities, we have an Instagram feed at https://www.instagram.com/toddlergroup.christchurch

The 321 course invites you to see life the way Jesus does. Over 4 weekly sessions, discover Jesus' vision for life through interactive videos that help us better understand God, the world and ourselves. We're running the course on Friday evenings and on Tuesday mornings alongside Warm Welcome sessions, with the aim of making them as accessible as possible. Just get in touch if you would like to join in, or to find out more.
