Student Christian Movement

Student Christian Movement Progressive, student-led faith in action 🌈 We also work closely with University Chaplaincies and Churches to support students whilst at university.

The Student Christian Movement of Britain has been a quiet but powerful presence in university life since 1889, making us the oldest Christian student organisation in the UK. We are a radically inclusive, student-led, LGBTQ+ affirming Christian community, and we provide a home for students to explore an open-minded Christian faith, pursue justice, and discover the beauty of an ecumenical community

whilst at university. We are a fully student-led organisation; our trustees are all students, and our student membership shape the direction of the movement. Our membership is made up of individual students and recent graduates, and we support student-led groups in over 25 UK universities. If you'd like to get involved as a student, chaplain or church leader email [email protected]. We are also part of the World Student Christian Federation, a global network of student movements. You can find other SCMs all over the world! If you'd like to get involved, or find out more, head to our website at www.movement.org.uk.

SCM Young Voices is BACK for 2026, and this year we'll be hosted by our friends at the in the Wild Goose venue!!

Applications are now open for 2026. We're looking for four GenZ theologians (either folk who have studied theology, or disciples with something to say) to deliver short talks at in August, on basically anything you think is important for progressive Christians and non-Christians to be thinking about today.

The new guidance from the EHRC will allow organisations to exclude trans* people from “single-s*x” spaces based on their biological s*x. The guidance says that organisations are legally required to provide a fair alternative to avoid committing illegal discrimination, but this isn’t good enough, and continues to “other” and dehumanise trans* people. For a clear summary of what is included in the guidance and the effect it’s likely to have on trans* folk, check out ’s post "The EHRC Code of Practice - what you need to know".

What can I do?
MPs have 40 days to raise any concerns about the draft guidance before it becomes law, so now is the time to email your MP, and ask your friends and family to as well. has a template you can use: https://buff.ly/AcpJXcM and the have also shared a template outline: https://buff.ly/neF3qJJ

Where can I find support?
If you need some extra support in the midst of this, here are some places to look:
- If you’re a trans* Christian student, join the SCM Trans* Theology Group (TTG). TTG meets twice a month online for talks and socials, as well as having an active WhatsApp chat. Email [email protected]
- specifically supports LGBT+ people who have experienced abuse and violence. Call 0800 999 5428 or email [email protected]
- specifically supports trans*, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young people (up to age 25), and their families. Call 0808 801 0400
- , support helpline and signposting service for people who identify as Trans*, agender, non-binary, gender q***r: 0300 330 5468

And finally, as an organisation, we want to reaffirm that trans* folk are equal members of the body of Christ, created in God’s image, and deserve to be treated with dignity.
We are angry at the way trans* lives have been put under the microscope for all to dissect, and the way in which trans* people’s right to exist has been turned into a political debate.
We will continue to campaign for equality for trans* folk, as an organisation made up of both cis allies and trans* members. Please know that you are loved to your very core, by all at SCM, and by God.

At our recent joint AI and Justice Webinar with .Issues, Nathan Mladin suggested that AI is forcing us to reckon with the question "what is a person?", and encouraged us that Christians have something specific to offer in this moment.

📢 New in the SCM 'Lessons from the West End' series! 🎭

'Come From Away is so much more than just a story of what happened those five days in Gander. It serves to teach us a lesson that kindness is a choice and in times of fear and great pain we must come together in our humanity to support one another and show them love.'

Cat reflects on Come From Away and what the musical can teach us about the power of love and shared humanity in the face of unimaginable tragedy and fear. The show tells the story of some of the passengers on diverted planes in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Cat's blog is inspired by a recent local performance she saw by !

The full blog will be posted once our new website is live but in the meantime you can read it here.

If you would like to get involved with this series with reflections on what we can learn from another play or musical please get in touch with Cat! 🎫

☝️

Maybe you've just become a Christian and want to find out more about this faith you've embraced. Maybe you grew up in a church where there was a single "right" answer, and you're ready to explore different ideas. Maybe you're a progressive Christian looking to revisit the building blocks of what you believe. If so, 'Affirming Christianity: The Basics' is for you!

Designed for use in small groups and running over six sessions, 'The Basics' explores what many progressive Christians see as the touchstones of the faith - that God is love, that Jesus was born as a human, that he died and was raised for us, that faith means action, that God speaks through doubts, questions, and diverse experience, and that community matters.
