The Birmingham Buddhist Centre is part of the worldwide Triratna Buddhist Community (formerly known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, or FWBO), which was founded in 1967 by Sangharaksh*ta. The Triratna Buddhist Community makes Buddhism and meditation accessible as a living tradition in the modern world. Our Centre in Moseley is the heart of a network of spiritual friendships. Some memb

ers live together, others live with their families or alone. We practise and teach meditation and Buddhism to anyone who is interested. We welcome visits from schools, colleges, interfaith groups and other interested parties, or can arrange visiting speakers and meditation teachers. We also lead Buddhist funerals. Attached to the centre is a small shop offering a wide range of Buddhist literature, meditation and yoga equipment, incense, cards, Buddhist figures, and more. The centre also has a well kept garden at the rear which is available to use as a quiet space by our visitors. We also have shrine rooms that can be used, by arrangement, for silent meditation and a library where you are welcome to come and study the wisdom of the Buddha.

Suddhimani is sharing the importance of allowing the humble human experience to exist. She believes allowing the most low parts of ourselves be at home in our minds, helps them transform.

Watch the full video on our YouTube “at home with Suddhimani”

The Buddhist path is one of integrating all parts, sides, and versions of ourselves. It’s challenging work, but can lead to liberation and freedom.

Curious to do this? Keep coming along to sessions at the centre and see for yourself.

Don’t forget kindness is a strength. The world might try to tell you otherwise.

What Buddhism will tell you is that the vision of kindness is vast and unlimited.

It is for ALL beings.

A deeply courageous response to the aliveness of others, regardless of who they are.

Even if they hold differing views.

Even if they look different.

Even if they act differently.

Even if they are a different species entirely.

It’s a radical practice that goes against the grain, that goes against the ego.

Don’t forget, kindness has power too.

Ingle got creative for with a fundraising idea for the centre.

There’s a Tibetan tradition to paint White Tara in 24 hours and then hold a ceremony for healing and longevity.

Ingle wanted to do this for the centre, to honour the future building works, and as an artistic challenge for himself. He usually takes months to work on a painting of a figure.

Watch to the end to see the outcome 🤍

Meditation is all about being in your direct experience.

It’s about being aware of what is going on, inside your body, and also in your surroundings.

It’s not about sitting in a particular posture, it’s not even about being somewhere quiet necessarily.

If you can train yourself to be in the present moment, and keep coming back to that, then you are meditating.

Longer formal sitting practice will help you build that muscle.

And doing that with others is much easier than by yourself so we’d still recommend coming to a class at the Birmingham Buddhist Centre… though parks, bus stops, even the toilet are all great places to be aware.

Are you a carer? Do you know someone who is?

Maybe you or they don't use that term, but if someone provides support, be it emotional, mental or physical, due to ill health, old age or disabilities, and this support is necessary for someone else to get through their days, then you could qualify as a 'carer'

Often it's a role taken up to look after a loved one, friend or neighbour.

We're trying to reach unpaid carers across the city, and invite them along to an upcoming day break.

Time out for themselves.
Nourishment and relaxation.
Someone to care for them for a change!

Please pass this advert on to anyone who you think qualifies, or get in touch for more info.

💭 Thoughts in meditation… using the alphabet!

If you’ve tried to meditate, even just for 5 minutes, you’ll probably have noticed just how many thoughts there are in your mind.

And the aim is not to entirely empty your mind. The mind will always be thinking.

The aim is to focus the mind into awareness.

Some thoughts can help us do that, some distract us, some even encourage us.

🙌 Thanks for the content inspiration

“Experiences are preceded by mind, led by mind and produced by mind” are the first lines of the dhammapada

It eludes to the importance of mind.

Understanding the mind, being with the mind, perspective and freedom of mind is central to Buddhism, but do we even know what the mind is?

Find your mind. Right now, where is it? What is it?

There is not just one thing you can pin it down to. The mind is a process. It’s unfolding in every moment, how we interact and how we interpret the world.
