In June, the US Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s law protecting children from harmful and life-altering drugs and surgeries — a landmark victory for children’s health and responsible medical care.
The United States v. Skrmetti ruling will help protect 26 similar state laws and return common sense to America’s medical system.
The Court held that Tennessee’s Senate Bill 1, a bipartisan law passed in 2023, is constitutional. The law prohibits health care providers from providing puberty blockers or cross-s*x hormones or potentially irreversible surgeries to encourage children to live as the opposite s*x.
This ruling comes at a time when the world is awakening to the irreversible harms caused by gender ideology.
In the UK, the closure of London’s Tavistock Clinic and the publication of the Cass Review signalled a clear rejection of gender ideology experimentation on children.
The Cass Review, led by paediatrician Dr. Hilary Cass, confirmed what many had long feared: that children were being exposed to medical interventions without a solid evidence base, and with potentially irreversible consequences.
Elsewhere in Europe, countries like Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and others have also taken legislative, judicial, or administrative steps to protect children from gender ideology.
And in Latin America, Chile moved to ban gender “transition” for children in May, following bans in Argentina and Brazil.
This growing international momentum reflects a simple truth: children deserve real care, not harmful medical experiments.
Our colleagues at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) in the US played a key role in defending the Tennessee law against the federal government’s challenge.
ADF CEO Kristen Waggoner says, “States are free to protect children from the greatest medical scandal in generations — and that’s exactly what states like Tennessee have done.”
