WHAT IS THE GREAT AMEN?
Understanding One of the Most Important Responses at Mass
Its Meaning, Importance, and Place in the Holy Mass
“Every Catholic has said the word ‘Amen’ many times during the Mass. We say it after prayers, blessings, and when receiving Holy Communion. Yet there is one Amen that stands above all the others. The Church calls it the Great Amen.”
Many Catholics hear it every Sunday but may not realize its profound significance. The Great Amen is not merely another response. It is one of the most important moments of participation by the faithful in the entire celebration of the Holy Mass.
Understanding the Great Amen can help us participate more consciously, actively, and devoutly in the sacred liturgy.
1. WHAT IS THE GREAT AMEN?
The Great Amen is the solemn response of the congregation at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer.
It occurs immediately after the priest proclaims:
“Through Him, and with Him, and in Him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is Yours, for ever and ever.”
The people then respond:
AMEN
This response is called the Great Amen because it is the faithful’s solemn affirmation of the entire Eucharistic Prayer that has just been offered.
2. WHERE DOES THE GREAT AMEN OCCUR IN THE MASS?
The Great Amen occurs at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, just before the Communion Rite begins.
It follows:
* The Preface
* The Holy, Holy, Holy
* The Consecration
* The Memorial Acclamation
* The Intercessions of the Eucharistic Prayer
* The Final Doxology (“Through Him, and with Him, and in Him…”)
The Great Amen therefore marks the conclusion of the most sacred prayer of the Mass.
3. WHY IS IT CALLED “GREAT”?
Not every Amen in the Mass carries the same liturgical weight.
The Church refers to this response as the Great Amen because it is the congregation’s powerful and solemn assent to everything that has been prayed during the Eucharistic Prayer.
At that moment, the faithful are affirming:
* The sacrifice of Christ made present on the altar
* The offering of the Church
* The praise and glory given to God the Father
* The work of the Holy Spirit
* The mystery of the Holy Eucharist
It is the people’s great “Yes” to the sacred action taking place at the altar.
4. WHAT DOES “AMEN” MEAN?
The word Amen comes from Hebrew and can be understood as:
* “So be it”
* “It is true”
* “I believe”
* “Yes”
When Catholics proclaim the Great Amen, they are not merely repeating a word.
They are declaring their faith and uniting themselves to the sacrifice being offered.
In effect, the faithful are saying:
“Yes, Lord. I believe. I unite myself to this offering.”
5. WHY IS THE GREAT AMEN SO IMPORTANT?
The Eucharistic Prayer is the summit of the Mass.
It is during this prayer that bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Great Amen is the congregation’s participation in this mystery.
For this reason, the Church encourages that it be sung or proclaimed with conviction, reverence, and joy.
A strong and prayerful Amen reflects the faith of the entire assembly.
6. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE GREAT AMEN?
Once the Great Amen has been proclaimed:
* The Eucharistic Prayer concludes
* The Communion Rite begins
* The faithful prepare to receive Holy Communion
The Great Amen therefore serves as a bridge between Christ’s Eucharistic sacrifice and our reception of Him in Holy Communion.
7. HOW SHOULD WE SAY THE GREAT AMEN?
The Great Amen should never be rushed, mumbled, or spoken absentmindedly.
Instead, it should be:
* Intentional
* Reverent
* Faith-filled
* Confident
Whether sung or spoken, it should come from a heart that truly believes what has just taken place upon the altar.
IN SUMMARY
The Great Amen is the congregation’s solemn affirmation of the entire Eucharistic Prayer.
It occurs after the priest proclaims:
“Through Him, and with Him, and in Him…”
and before the Communion Rite begins.
It is called “Great” because it is the most important Amen of the Mass, expressing the faith, worship, and participation of the entire Church in Christ’s sacrifice.
The next time you hear the final doxology at Mass, remember that your Amen is not merely a response.
It is your personal act of faith in the mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
