⚽ Did you know the World Cup has Catholic roots?

Nearly 5 billion people will watch the World Cup, but few know the man behind it, Jules Rimet, was inspired by his Catholic faith.

Moved by Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum and its call to defend human dignity, Rimet believed sport could unite people across race and class. He helped found FIFA in 1904 and launched the first World Cup in 1930, hoping it could bring together nations scarred by war and help prevent future conflict.

His grandson later described him as "a humanist and idealist who believed that sport could unite the world."

As we watch this year's tournament, let's pray that Rimet's vision, rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, continues to hold true: that sport might still bring people together rather than divide them 🙏

The early history of The Most Holy Redeemer is a story of quiet faith and determination. Before our church was built, families in Billericay met wherever they could, in homes, school rooms and even a small hut by the railway line. These simple gatherings kept the community alive and slowly prepared the way for a permanent church.

In 1909 a house on the high street became a small chapel, and in 1913 the foundation stone of our church was laid. What began with small groups meeting in borrowed spaces grew into the parish we know today.

Thank you to all the families who joined us for our GIFT barbecue yesterday. It was a joy to see so many children and parents spending time together, sharing food, and enjoying a lovely afternoon as a community. We are grateful to everyone who came along and helped make the day so special.

Our votive stands are placed on each side of the altar, with a statue of Jesus on the left and a statue of the Virgin Mary on the right.

You are welcome to light a candle and spend a quiet moment in prayer.

You can stand or kneel, bow your head, close your eyes and speak to God in whatever way feels right.

Some people use formal prayers like the “Our Father”, while others share a personal worry, a hope or a prayer for someone they love.

This peaceful space is here for anyone who needs it.
