Isaiah 42:5-7

This is what God the Lord says—the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people,
and life to those who walk on it: “I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

The words of the Lord through Isaiah remind the reader of who He is. The creator of all things, the One who gives us and every living thing breath. The sense is that we are created for a purpose. God does not waste His time. He cares about us and wants us to work and live for Him. He has called each one of us to be His hands and feet here on earth. He has made a covenant with us. A promise of what is to come and our part is to be true and faithful to Him in the way we live our lives. To be concerned for others. To open the yes of the blind, in this sense I think it is talking of spiritual eyes so that they can see God and realise who He is. Although Jesus did say that His followers would do greater things than He had by healing and transforming peoples lives. (John 14:12). To help those who are wrongfully imprisoned but also those who are imprisoned by their thoughts or situations. Bringing them from darkness into His wonderful light.

We should be in no doubt that God has given us a job to do and if we are willing to follow Him then working for Him is not an option but something that we must do to the best of our ability, knowing that He is with us.

Isaiah 42:1-4

“Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My, chosen One in whom I delight;
I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smouldering wick He will not s***f out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice; He will not falter or be discouraged
till He establishes justice on earth. In His teaching the islands will put their hope.”

These verses give an insight into who the Messiah, the Son of God, will be and what He will do. I often have to remind myself that these words were written some 8ooyrs before Jesus actually arrived on earth!! Jesus the Son of God was chosen by God as the only One capable of doing what was needed to be done, and God the Father takes delight in Him. I imagine the same delight as any parent would take in a child, because they love them. And He will have the full backing of the Father, which is very comforting for any child. As Jesus said when His parents found Him in the Temple at the age of 12, ‘did you not know that I had to be about my Father’s business’ (Luke 2:49)

This servant, the Messiah will be full of God’s Spirit, He will bring justice, but in a quiet effective way. He will not have to shout or make a noise to be heard. He will have a quiet, calming, authoritative influence. He will be gentle, able to deal with those who are hurting and fragile. Nothing will put Him off or discourage Him. He will see the work that has been assigned to Him finished. People everywhere will put their hope in Him.

May we continue to trust Him as He completes His work here in earth and in us.

Every blessing,

Adrian and Catherine

Live like you believe it!

‘‘He did not waver at the promise of God.’’

Romans 4:20 NKJV

The Archbishop of Canterbury was acquainted with an actor named Mr Butterton. One day he asked Butterton, ‘What is the reason you actors on stage can affect your congregations with the speaking of things imaginary, as if they were real, while we in church speak of things real, which our congregations only receive as if they were imaginary?’ Butterton replied, ‘We actors on stage speak of things imaginary as if they were real, and you in the pulpit speak of things real as if they were imaginary.’

The world needs Christians who speak like they believe what God said in His Word is true, and who live accordingly. When Abraham was eighty, God promised him he would father a son. Twenty years later, it hadn’t happened, but Abraham was standing firmly on God’s Word: ‘He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform’ (vv. 20-21 NKJV).

William James, the first educator to offer a course in psychology, said, ‘If you want a quality, act as if you already had it.’ He also said, ‘Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.’ Saint Augustine said, ‘God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.’ If you fully grasp the truth of this, it’ll set you free from fear because that’s what God’s perfect love does (see 1 John 4:18). God can’t love you any more or any less because He already loves you unconditionally, eternally. You just need to live like His beloved.

Isaiah 41:8-10
“But you, Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham My friend, I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are My servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

God is the creator and sustainer of all things. It doesn’t matter where we live, how far we think we are away from the places that we may think God is. We can be assured that He is with us and supporting us. Upholding us with His righteous right-hand Isaiah says.

Why does He do this? Because He is our God and He has called us. He did not call us and then forget about us but He called us and then sustains us. He is always with us, wherever we go. As David says in Psalm 139 Where can I go from Your presence, if I go up to the heavens you are there, if I go into the darkest place You are there even to the utmost parts of the earth… That ought to be a comfort to us, knowing God is with us and there is absolutely nowhere we can go to get away from Him or to be out of His reach.

Isaiah 40:21-24

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than He blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

There are some things that never change. There are some things that we have been told about for as long as we can remember. There are things that we have always done. For me I cannot remember learning to swim. All I know is that I was taken to the local swimming pool at a very young age and as far as I am concerned have always been able to swim. For others you will have learnt at some point in your life, whilst others cannot swim for all sorts of different reasons.

Here Isaiah is reminding the people that what they know about God has not changed. He is as He was from the beginning of time. Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded…… God is God and there is no other!! He was at the beginning of time; He has been here all the time and He will be here through the future. Unlike the world leaders who are only here for a short time. Everything and everyone is temporary compared to God. But as we were looking at on Sunday, we have a future with Him, if we accept the invitation to become part of His family.

Isaiah 40:18-20

With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken Him?
As for an idol, a metalworker casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. A person too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot; they look for a skilled worker to set up an idol that will not topple.

Still the question is being asked about who could possibly be compared to God? There are so many idols and images about today as there have been through time that people worship. People have done and still do make money out of making idols or images of so-called gods. If you have any such images or idols in your home then I would encourage you to get rid of them as they can bring in other spirits to your home or garden. It doesn’t matter how ornate or expensive they are, they are still made by people. We have the account in 1 Samuel 5 of what happened after the Philistines had capture the ark of the covenant. Thye took it and placed it in the Temple of dagon one of their gods. In the morning dagon had fallen over. They put stood him back up next to the ark of the covenant. The next morning dagon had fallen over again but this time his head and hands had broken off. As the chorus says ‘down went dagon smashed in pieces when the ark of God came in, so will God destroy those idols which defile our hearts within’

There is only one God and He tells us not to make any graven image.

The scripture

12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” 13 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? The Lord turned to him and said... [Judges 6:12-13a]

The gift

Because we love a hero in our films, books and box sets, we sometimes characterise biblical figures as heroes when actually they were just people like us. The real lesson isn’t, ‘You too can be a hero!’ The lesson is, ‘Look! God can use normal people like you and me!’

The story of Gideon isn’t just a Sunday school teacher’s dream. Amidst all the drama, here is someone who isn’t an obvious candidate to do an extraordinary thing, and that sounds suspiciously like us.

The promise

The promise is for Gideon, who is by his own reckoning from, ‘the weakest clan in Manasseh, and I am the least of my family.’ It is simple – the Lord says, ‘I will be with you.’

This is the promise made again and again. And again and again, by God to the people He calls. He guarantees, on the pledge of His word, His proximity, nearness, and closeness. And this is His promise to us in these days – by his Spirit.

The difference

The Holy Spirit is the power that makes connections. Connecting us with God, and with others, and opening us up to do what is only possible with God. And because of this we can have confidence – literally – con = with and fidence = faith. Take heart! Have faith! God is close in Spirit to you – enabling you to live, work, speak and love for Him. And God longs to connect your five friends to Him

Isaiah 40:6-8

A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said “What shall I cry?” “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

There almost seems a sense of desperation in Isaiah’s voice. “What shall I cry?” It is a sense of each person does not have much time here on earth and how can I get round them all. People are here today and gone tomorrow in one sense. When we think about the world and how long it has been going our life span is only a very short time. To me there is an urgency to Isaiah’s cry. Also is it that he wants to get it right. How many times, if you are like me have you had opportunity to speak to someone and afterwards you think you have blown it or not said the things you should have said. I am reading the book Light Force by Brother Andrew at the moment. In one of the chapters he tells of how he had the opportunity to speak to a group of students at a Muslim University. A few walked out and he felt very unhappy with how it had gone. A year later he was back in the town when a young man said don’t I know you? Brother Andrew apologised that he did not recognise the young man, who then said I know you were the man who spoke to us last year at the University. He went on to thank Brother Andrew for what he had said, after that Brother Andrew met a few others students who also thanked him. We never know the impact of what we say. We have to trust God to give us the right words at the right time and leave the rest to Him.

“What shall I cry says Isaiah?” He realises the importance of the message of God to people. He also realises that however temporary we are as human beings the Word of God stands forever. It is timeless and as important today as it always has been.

Good Morning,

Hope you are able to have a good day.

Isaiah 40:3-5

A voice of one calling “In the desert prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Prepare the way of the Lord. It is something each one of us has a responsibility to do. Often when we read these words, we think of John the Baptist and how he references these words in Matthew 3:3. He was the one sent to prepare the way for Jesus. But we too have that role to play in our lives. To prepare a smooth path a highway. To remove any obstacles that may hinder peoples, access to Him or Him reaching into the hearts of others.

To make the rough ground level. I was talking to someone last week who was telling me about their garden and allotment they have taken on. They have not been in their accommodation long and apparently the garden was in a bit of a state not having been looked after. The same applied to the allotment. They told me how they had worked hard to get both into a position where they could actually plant some crops. How they had to remove the weeds and stones that were there. They had made the rugged places plain, prepared for the role they should have.

We have a job to do. It may not be easy at times but we are to make way for Christ the King to arrive in splendour, so that all can see His glory.

Isaiah 40:1, 2

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

How we all need comfort at times in our lives. It may come in the form of kind words or a hug or act of kindness.

Jerusalem had been going through a hard time, and there was still a 100yrs until the fall of Jerusalem followed by 70 years of exile. Jerusalem has always been a troubled city and still is as we look at the world today. But Isaiah is encouraged by God to issues these words of comfort to the city. He was to tell them that their sins had been paid for. When we are going through hard times, we appreciate words of comfort delivered in the right way. Speak tenderly God says to Isaiah.

We all face testing times and for some the comfort is that one day we will go to be with Him and that will be far better as Paul says. But for now we need to press on with the calling God has given us, knowing that He is with us and one day we will be with Him forever.

May you be comforted and also bring comfort to those you have opportunity to, speaking tenderly.

Every blessing,
