Thomas’ Pentecost - a poem by Mike Mullens
It’s just fifty days
since He rose from the tomb
Walked through the locked doors
to the upper room
I touched the wounds
in His hands and side
And from then on my doubting
I have cast aside.
‘Tis scarcely a week
since we all saw the sight
Of Him ascending to heaven
by God’s awesome might
But when He had left us
we felt so bereft
Asking which way to turn
to the right or the left.
For three years He taught us
and showed us the way
We followed and listened
to what He had to say
But this Great Commission
that enormous great task
We have to carry,
but where to start, we all ask?
In the upper room
we gathered round
Worried and anxious
when a strange soft sound
Began to grow louder
like a storm on the lake
Broke over the room
and made the whole house shake.
I looked at the others
across the dark room
And saw flames round their heads
in the candlelit gloom.
And then like the sun
coming up in my head
I felt power and purpose,
a complete end to dread.
I found myself speaking
in a tongue I don’t know
Seeing visions and feeling things
inside me grow.
I got to my feet
and followed Peter outside
To shout out the wonders
exploding inside.
That was the beginning
and we never looked back
Jesus filled us so full
there was never a lack.
We preached and we healed
and we gave forth His peace
And we passed out His Spirit
so His church could increase.
I will never forget
when the Spirit descended
All the things that I felt
how the joy never ended.
They call me “The Doubter”
but I don’t really care
We all had our doubts,
now we’re all so aware.
To the ends of the earth
the Commission demands
So I head far away
as the Spirit commands.
Each place that I enter
I preach Jesus’ word
And the Spirit within me
makes sure I am heard.
So don’t doubt, but be certain
that His word is all true
And the gift of the Spirit
just like me, is for you.
So open your heart
and let our Saviour come in
Welcome brothers and sisters
and save them from sin.
