Thank you for all the support.
Dear Friends of the Armstrong Café,
Thank you to everyone who has expressed their sadness and shock at the news that Armstrong Café will be closing in its current form. We understand how much the café means to the community, which has made this an incredibly difficult decision.
When we set up the café, our hope was to create a welcoming space—a valuable resource especially for those on the edges of our community. We are deeply grateful that, for a time, it has been able to do just that.
Opening soon after the last lockdown, we aimed for the café to cover its own costs: that the income from food and drinks would be enough to pay for supplies and staff wages. In the early days, it almost managed to do so. However, over the past 18 months, the shortfall has steadily increased, and unfortunately, it continues to grow.
Beverley Baptist Church is a small fellowship of around 40 members. We give what we can from our own pockets, but there’s a limit to how much we can contribute to sustain the café in its current form.
That said, we are hopeful—and prayerful—that this is not the end. Rather, a pause. We’re exploring how we might continue providing some of the services in a different, more sustainable way. Perhaps by finding volunteers to help run a scaled-back version of the café a few times a week or partnering with other organisations who can use the café space to offer similar services. At this stage, nothing is certain, but we are trusting that something new and equally valuable will take shape in time.
And just for clarity—the Armstrong Centre itself is not closing.
We currently intend to keep running the Monday morning Warm Spaces group, the Friday Toddler group, and the monthly Seniors group, although there may be some changes to catering services provided.
The Centre will also continue to be used by a wide variety of groups every week.
Thank you again for all the love, support, and appreciation you’ve shown for Armstrong Café. If you’d like to stay informed about future plans, one-off events, or if we’re able to restart regular activities, please join our mailing list.
And if you have ideas or suggestions for how we might move forward, we would love to hear from you. While we can’t promise to implement every idea, we promise to consider them all.
With gratitude,
The Armstrong Centre & Beverley Baptist Teams
