Belper Baptist Church Our Mission:
To live by faith as God's church,
inspired by His Word;
To be known by love in our community.

14/05/2026

From today until Sunday 24th May, we are invited to join with Christians around the world in a short season of prayer called “Thy Kingdom Come” which happens every year between Ascension Day and Pentecost Sunday.

The accompanying booklets take the theme of God With Us and give us a set of daily Bible readings, reflections and invitations to prayer to help us to focus on the work of God the Holy Spirit in the world. We are also invited to pray, during this time, for five people - friends, family members, neighbours or colleagues - who do not yet follow Christ, that they may come to know Jesus as we do.

The worldwide church now has many ways of worshipping, praying and working, yet Christians around the world are united in the midst of this diversity by our shared faith in Jesus Christ and our expectation that God the Holy Spirit will continue to encourage, empower and equip us.

Come, Holy Spirit.

This Sunday, we will begin a new series for our adult congregation in which we will look at some of the things that John’s gospel tells us about Jesus. Between now and the end of August, we will learn about times when Jesus showed compassion for people that he met, about some of Jesus' teaching and about what the seven “I am” sayings tell us about the importance of having faith in Jesus.

This Sunday’s service will be an all-age service, so the worship will be shaped for people of all ages and abilities. On most Sundays, though, the children and young people spend most of their time engaging in separate age-appropriate activities in our recently refurbished children’s and young people’s areas.

All of our Sunday services begin at 10.30am and we serve refreshments afterwards. Why not join us?

In a world of great darkness and despair, it can sometimes be very hard to see our way through. Where is the light? Where is the hope? Where is the love?

Almost 2,000 years ago, Jesus changed people’s lives for the better through his presence, his wisdom, the ways he helped people to get to know God and the amazing things that he did. Even so, some people wanted to get rid of Jesus and the suffering and death of Jesus on a cross may have given the impression to those who hated him - and to those who loved him - that the light, hope and love of Jesus had been overcome. And yet, a few days later, an empty tomb brought new light, new hope and the realisation that God’s love had overcome even death. Jesus was alive!

At a time when so much of what happens in the world revolves around selfishness, hatred, cruelty and not caring for the world in which we live, it would be easy to feel overwhelmed by darkness and despair. Even so, the opening part of the Gospel of John reminds us that “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” We are God’s people, this is God’s world and as today, all over the world, Christians affirm that Christ is risen, we know that light, hope and love of God will never be defeated by even the darkest of things that human beings can do.

God hasn’t given up on us and God’s light shines on in the world. To find out more about the difference that Jesus can make to your life, come along to Belper Baptist Church on any Sunday morning for our 10.30am service and meet some of the people whose lives have been changed for the better because of the light, hope and love of Jesus.

As we are now in the final weeks of Lent and looking forward to Easter Day, we will begin a new short series this Sunday looking at some of the final events before Jesus’ crucifixion and at some of the events after his resurrection. Our Bible passages from Matthew’s gospel will remind us both of the cruelty that was shown to Jesus by those who failed to see how he was fulfilling God’s promises and of the unique hope that we have, as Christians, because of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection. In today’s world, where there are so many struggles and challenges, what happened at Easter all those years ago continues to assure us that God’s light and hope can break through even the darkest of times.

I took this photo on a recent early morning walk. Having just walked up that hill, I knew that this road would take me back down to the town where we were staying, but I also knew that it would be steep, wet and icy in places, with a fair amount of traffic. It had been an enjoyable, if challenging, walk up to this point, but I knew that I would now need to choose my route carefully to arrive back safely.

When Jesus invited his first disciples to follow him, they would not have known exactly how following Jesus would affect their lives but, in doing so, they would experience encouragement, affirmation, challenges and correction along the way. If we think of life as a journey in which we are aiming follow the example and teaching of Jesus, then we will need to choose our route carefully; there will be times when we will need to be spiritually refreshed and times when we may need to work out how to get back on track in following Jesus.

Today is Ash Wednesday - the beginning of the season of Lent, which continues until the day before Easter Sunday. Lent is traditionally a time for Christians to reflect, pray and give, so it is a really good time to focus on the route that we are taking in following Jesus. What, then, might it might be helpful to do, or to stop doing, for spiritual refreshment and for getting back on track in following Jesus during this special season of Lent?

The times that we spend together at Belper Baptist Church, whether in worship, prayer, Bible study, or sharing in other activities, are all times when we are able to support and encourage one another in following the example and teaching of Jesus in daily life.

This Sunday, as we gather for worship at 10.30am, our adult congregation will be starting a new seven-week series looking at the letters to the seven churches in the New Testament book of Revelation. The praise, observations and advice shared with those early Christian congregations will help us to think about being part of God’s church and living well for Jesus in today’s world.

Meanwhile, our children and young people will continue their own series of activities exploring how Jesus used storytelling to get his points across with his parables.

There’s a lot for us to look forward to on Sundays in the coming weeks. 🙂
