Each week one of our band members shares devotions during our band practice. Here's what Lesley Ann Paterson shared at last week's practice.

When my kids were a lot younger, we used to watch two You Tube channels: one called FGTEEV – “Family Gaming Teams Extraordinarily Entertaining Videos” - which was basically a channel about a family that made vlogs about playing video games together, and FUNnel vision, which was more daily family life based. They have 44 million subscribers to their channels, and over 50 billion collective views on their videos, so their reach and influence is quite vast.

Both channels were run by the same American family - you have mum and dad, Moomy and Duddy, and 4 kids – Lexi who’s about 20 now, Mike in his late teens, Chase and Shawn who are around the same ages as my kids. Duddy, whose real name is Vincent, was loud, and funny and a bit hyperactive. For unknown reasons – Duddy was never seen without a hat.

We kind of fell away from watching their videos as their kids, and my kids, got older but I still followed them on social media. I noticed that they shifted from light‑hearted gaming and family content to more Christian‑focused posts around early 2025. In December 2025, they released a serious video revealing a long‑kept secret: Duddy always wore hats because he was born with grade 2 microtia, leaving him with a deformed left ear and 90% hearing loss on that side. This caused him lifelong shame, bullying, depression, and spiritual struggle. It had such an effect on his life, that he had thoughts of ending it.

He hid his condition for decades, even from his children. He fell away from church and from God all together. His mother, however, consistently prayed for him, and visualized him one day sharing his story publicly. And this day had finally come – he was sharing his story and publicly acknowledging his return to faith and sharing this with his massive social media and YouTube following.

He shared Genesis ch50 v20: “What you meant for evil against ne, God is using for good to do what is being done now for the saving of many lives”. Evil tried to tear him down, to make him feel less than, and to try and ruin or end his life, but now he was dedicating his life and his platform to try and help other broken people.

In the video he shared a clip of a pastor from Vizion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, who preached on this, and in the clip he says that “when you are afflicted you have 2 options: you can let it poison you and try to kill you, or you can offer it back to Jesus in his service and allow your affliction to bring healing to others. Do not be ashamed of the wounds of your past, as these are the things God will use to bring healing to the nation.”

My interpretation of this is that difficult circumstances can be transformed into opportunities for blessing and that God’s providence can turn adversity into a means of accomplishing good.

Duddy/Vincent has since redefined FGTEEV to mean – For God’s Truth, Every Effort Victorious. He is no longer keeping his true story or his faith hidden behind the "Duddy" persona. Luke ch8 v17 says "For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open." Just as Vincent felt the need to be honest with his massive audience, we are called to live authentically before God and others. Secrets cannot stay hidden because exposure is inevitable, honesty with God and others, repentance from sin, and confidence in God’s just vindication become the only sensible way to live.

Standing for Christ can sometimes be difficult, but it is worth it and as Vincent has shown, the gospel’s power is transformative. Vincent took his difficult circumstance, and used it as an opportunity to be unashamedly vocal about his faith. He is chose observation and truth over seeking validation from the world. Romans ch1 v 16 says “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes..."

We may not have individual YouTube channels, with millions of followers, but may we have the courage to share our faith with those we meet, and to transform our difficult circumstances in to opportunities to influence and change the lives of others for good.

Today's theme: Taking your faith through the roof

As the call to worship the band played Paul Sharman's hymn tune arrangement, 'Time To Be Holy'.

Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

During worship the band played the hymn tune arrangement 'People Need the Lord' (Greg Nelson & Phill McHugh arr Tom Fettke Trs Howard Davies).

Every day they pass me by
I can see it in their eyes
Empty people filled with care
Headed who knows where

On they go through private pain
Living fear to fear
Laughter hides their silent cries
Only Jesus hears

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door
People need the Lord, people need the Lord
When will we realise people need the Lord?

We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right
What could be too great a cost
For sharing life with one who's lost?

Through His love our hearts can feel
All the grief they bear
They must hear the words of life
Only we can share

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door
People need the Lord, people need the Lord
When will we realise that we must give our lives?
For people need the Lord, people need the Lord

Major David told us that story in Luke 5:17-26, gives us an insight into the church today, as every church has
- someone in need
- someone who cares
- someone who is preoccupied
- someone who is critical
- someone who is missing
Which people are we in this list? Major David encouraged us by reminding us that God is in this meeting with us. God. God will give us what we need before He will give us what we want. Jesus can power our lives to be what God longs for us to be. We all need to be all in.

The band concluded our worship by playing the hymn tune 'In Thee, O Lord'.

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust,
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust,
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust.

This morning we share 'Make Me a Channel of Your Peace' played by our principal euphonium player, YP Band Leader Chris Shanks.

Make me a channel of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me bring you love;
Where there is injury, your healing pow'r,
And where there's doubt, true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace:
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
Where there is darkness, - only light,
And where there's sadness, ever joy.

O Spirit, grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving to all that we receive,
And in dying that we're born to eternal life.

We hope you enjoy this recording are blessed by the words and the music.

We would be delighted if you want to share with us in worship this morning (or any Sunday), either in-person, or by watching our live stream which will start at 10:15: https://www.youtube.com/live/6ihYDGBi3Qs?si=8jmIj6CQ4yggBpmn

04/03/2026

There are days when praise comes easily to us. Days when the sun feels warm on your face, when prayers are answered quickly, when joy rises without effort, and all feels well in your life. But then there are the other days, the ones where praise feels like lifting a weight you’re not sure you are able to carry.

The bible never tells us that life with God is free from struggles. In fact in the Psalms we read of many who are crying out in their struggles from many places such as caves, battlefields, ill health and lonely places. Yet woven through them is a stubborn, almost defiant thread of praise, not because everything is perfect, but because God is still God, and is still with present.

Sometimes the most powerful worship we offer is the kind that rises in spite of what we feel, or the struggles we’re going through.

In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat faced an impossible battle – His army was outnumbered, his people were terrified, but instead of rallying the troops with strategy, he sent out singers – people whose only weapon was worship, and as they sang, God moved in ways they never could have imagined. Praise didn’t ignore their battle – It led them through it.

That’s the heart of Lauren Daigle’s song “𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗕𝗲 𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗹𝘂𝗷𝗮𝗵.” The song is a reminder that worship isn’t just what we bring when we’re living the mountaintop life, it’s what we bring when life is a struggle, messy, uncertain, or heavy. It’s choosing to say:

𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴—𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱.

It’s not because we’re strong, but because God is faithful. It’s not because we feel brave, but because God is near. It’s not because everything is resolved, but because God is worthy.

Let praise becomes a declaration:
𝘎𝘰𝘥, 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴, 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺.

And when we choose to offer that kind of hallelujah, quiet or loud, trembling or confident, it becomes a doorway for God’s peace to enter our hearts and our lives.

As the call to worship the band played the hymn tune 'O Happy Day'.

O happy day that fixed my choice
On Thee, my Saviour and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
And tell its raptures all abroad.

Chorus
Happy day, happy day,
When Jesus washed my sins away!
He taught me how to watch and pray,
And live rejoicing every day;
Happy day, happy day,
When Jesus washed my sins away!

O happy bond that seals my vows
To him who merits all my love!
Let cheerful praises fill his house
While to his blessed throne I move.

'Tis done, the great transaction's done!
I am my Lord's and he is mine;
He drew me, and I followed on,
Charmed to confess the voice divine.

During worship the band played Andrew Blyth's 'In God's Presence'. It features the songs 'Bow the Knee' and 'All to Jesus I Surrender'.

There are moments on our journey following the Lord
When God illumines ev'ry step we take.
There are times when circumstances make perfect sense to us,
As we try to understand each move He makes.
When the path grows dim and our questions have no answers, turn to Him.

Bow the knee.
Trust the heart of your Father when the answer goes beyond what you can see.
Bow the knee.
Lift your eyes toward heaven and believe the One who holds eternity.
And when you don't understand the purpose of His plan,
In the presence of the King, bow the knee.

There are days when clouds surround us, and the rain begins to fall,
The cold and lonely winds won't cease to blow.
And there seems to be no reason for the suffering we feel;
We are tempted to believe God does not know.
When the storms arise, don't forget we live by faith and not by sight.

Bow the knee.
Trust the heart of your Father when the answer goes beyond what you can see.
Bow the knee.
Lift your eyes toward heaven and believe the One who holds eternity.
And when you don't understand the purpose of His plan,
In the presence of the King, bow the knee.

All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

I surrender all,
I surrender all.
All to thee, my blessed Saviour,
I surrender all.

Today was self-denial, so during the meeting we had our altar service when we were able to place our monetary gifts on our altar table.

Worship today was led our corps officers Majors David and Gillian Burns, and Cadet Mark Woods, who is with us on placement for a week.

We all struggle with different things; We all have parts of our lives that we don't want others to see; There are things that Satan knows how to use against us. However Major David reminded us that Satan has no power or authority over us, except the power and authority we give him. However Christ wants us to live a victorious life, He wants us to reach our full potential in Him. May we allow Him to help us achieve that.

The band concluded our worship by playing the hymn tune 'Lord, I Lift Your Name On High'.

Lord I lift your name on high
Lord I love to sing your praises
I'm so glad you are in my life
I'm so glad you came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth, to show the way
From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay
From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky
Lord I lift your name on high.

When the oceans rise and thunders roar
I will soar with you above the storm
Father, You are King over the flood
I will be still and know You are God

In quietness and trust

When the oceans rise and thunders roar
I will soar with you above the storm
Father, You are King over the flood
I will be still and know You are God

Your Joy Oh lord

Renouncing fear
We stand in your glorious grace.

Last Wednesday night at band practice our devotions were provided by David Ferguson. We'd like to share these with you today.

I have been thinking about my faith and relationship with God as I am sure we all do. I also think about my actions and influences and worry that I fall short of the mark.

As I get older this is a regular bit of self introspection. I suppose without being morbid ….mortality comes more into focus and your thinking.

This was especially the case in going along to support a friend and his family at his brothers funeral.

A few things gave me cause to ponder.

I liked the ministers throw away line of “I do not have enough faith to be an atheist “ when you look at the beauty and complexity of us as human beings and the world we are in.

He also said something that his brother had said to him.

When he knew the doctors could do no more for him he had comforted his brother by saying “it is okay…..I am ready ”.

What a powerful statement of faith to say and what a beautiful thing to believe. Especially when the brother was not that old with so many experiences to still have.

My Gran felt the same thing but she was in her 90s and had outlived most of her peers and had outlived her husband by nearly 30 years….but she felt she was ready.

That really challenged me. “Am I ready”……and the instant gut reaction answer being……no I am probably not.

So why is that and what shall I do about it.

Physically I know selfishly that there is so much I want to see and experience from this amazing world he has created for us. The family he has given to me and the opportunity to see their lives unfold as well as the support I can give them.

Spiritually it is possibly about doubts in the position I find myself in on my journey with him. As always the feeling from my conversion as an 18 year old to now as a 60 year old is different and possibly diluted with the passage of time rather as where I perceive that relationship should be.

I know It is about faith and relationship with god but ultimately about how God feels rather than me•

Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen". It is often defined as total dependence on God's character rather than self-effort.

In leading busy lives that possibly plays a part in my current journey with God…..self effort rather than total dependence on God …..but I hold onto the fact that I am still journeying with a desire to reignite a closer relationship with God.

A friend in the band had inspired me with his band devotions last year, where he does his devotions in his car parked outside his work before he starts his day.

Since then I have a prayer walk everyday from where I park my car to my work. Devotions on the move….but I realise this may be more one sided, as am I able to hear god speaking to me in this environment?…..but it is a start and I know I need to make more quiet time so that I can focus and hear God speaking to me in return.

I am not on Facebook but get a bit hooked on the warren that Instagram sometimes takes you on.

One regular feature is “ I was today years old when I realised …..” highlighting something you have just realised or some potential truth that was just pointed out to you.

Some can be rubbish but again one has stuck with me …..and ties up with “Am I ready”

It showed the famous picture by Michelangelo of the Creation Of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. God surrounded by his angels…. arm outstretched to a reclining Adam also with arm outstretched.

How many times have we seen that image? (The first image below)

The “I was today years old “moment was the commentary that gods arm and finger is fully extended to Adam but Adam’s finger isn’t. Their respective fingers are not touching…..Michelangelo left a deliberate gap.

It could be viewed as God pointing out his creation that he was proud off. It could be God having created Adam releasing him to live and see how that would unfold. Or ….. he is reaching out to his creation.

The second picture below highlights the “I was today years old” point.

Adam’s finger is bent…..but should he choose to extend it fully….he would touch God. He would have that connection and relationship.

God is there for us ….but we need to make the move…..make the effort ….make the decision to have that connection. He is not forcing us….it is our choice.

As we prepare ourselves on the spiritual journey we find ourselves on, isn’t it amazing that our God is always there for us and wants to be with us. We just need to submit to God in his strength and will and make the effort to reach out to him.

As Christian’s we have the certainty, comfort and excitement to be in that journey, when we reach out and connect God knows it is our genuine desire to have that relationship with him. Our challenge is to live our life to the full and immerse ourselves in Gods creation and all he has given to us. More importantly to spiritually work towards that beautiful point that when we are called to him we ARE spiritually ready.

Today's theme: Jesus loves me! This I know, for the bible tells me so.

As the call to worship the band played 'The Lord is Gracious' (Darren Bartlett arr. Olaf Ritman). It is based on Psalm 103 and includes the words "The Lord is gracious, abounding in perfect love, and slow to anger. He rules the earth in Heav'n above"

During worship the band played Paul Drury's arrangement of the song 'Such Love'.

Such love, pure as the whitest snow
Such love, weeps for the shame I know
Such love, paying the debt I owe
O Jesus, such love

Such love, stilling my restlessness
Such love, filling my emptiness
Such love, showing me holiness
O Jesus, such love

Such love, springs from eternity
Such love, streaming through history
Such love, fountain of life to me
O Jesus, such love

Our corps officers are on holiday this week, so our worship this morning was led by Commissioners Carol and Ivor Telfer (R).

People need to know love, and need to be shown love in practical ways. Jesus is the one who gives us love, so that we can then share it with others. Commissioner Ivor encouraged us to keep loving others from our heart, regardless of who they are, or how they may have hurt us in the past. Jesus doesn't hold our past against us, so we must not hold the past of others against them.

The band concluded our worship by playing the hymn tune 'Love Lifted Me'.

I was sinking deep in sin
Far from the peaceful shore
Very deeply stained within
Sinking to rise no more
But the master of the sea
Heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me
Now safe am I

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me

Souls in danger look above
Jesus completely saves
He will lift you by his love
Out of the angry waves
But the master of the sea
Billows His will obey
He your saviour wants to be
Be saved today

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me

There’s a quiet courage in praying, “Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.” It’s not a request for perfection or performance. It’s a longing for Christ’s character to seep into the everyday corners of our lives, the moments when no one is watching, the rehearsals when we’re tired, the conversations where patience is tested, the choices that reveal who we really are. It’s about the beauty of Christ Himself that shows up in compassion, in patience, in holiness, in the quiet choices that no one applauds.

‘Let the Beauty of Jesus Be Seen In Me’ reminds us that the beauty of Jesus is not about outward polish but inward transformation:

𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 — a love that moves toward others with compassion.
𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 — a heart aligned with the Father’s will.
𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭 — shaping us gently, persistently, lovingly.

As a band, we don’t just play music; we carry a message. Every note, every smile, every act of service becomes an opportunity for Christ’s beauty to shine through us. And the good news is that we don’t manufacture that beauty ourselves. We simply open our lives to the Spirit’s refining work.

“𝘖 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘦, 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘺 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦…” – That’s our prayer as we play, as we worship, as we live.

May those who hear us, and those who meet us, catch a glimpse of Jesus in the way we serve, the way we love, and the way we carry ourselves this week.

Today's theme: This Jesus

As the call to worship the band played the hymn tune, 'Holy Ground'.

When I walk through the doors I sensed His presence
And I knew this was a place where love abounds
For this is a temple the God we love abides here
Oh we are standing in His presence on holy ground

We are standing on holy ground
For I know that there are angels all around
Let us praise Jesus now
For we are standing in His presence on holy ground

In His presence I know there is joy beyond all measure
And at His feet sweet peace of mind can still be found
For when we have a need He is still the answer
Reach out and claim it for we are standing on holy ground

We are standing on holy ground
For I know that there are angels all around
Let us praise Jesus now
For we are standing in His presence on holy ground

During worship the band played the hymn tune arrangement 'Colne' (Thomas Rive).

Jesus, the very thought of thee
With sweetness fills my breast;
But sweeter far thy face to see,
And in thy presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame,
Nor can the memory find
A sweeter sound than thy blest name,
O Saviour of mankind.

O hope of every contrite heart!
O joy of all the meek!
To those who fall, how kind thou art,
How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find? Ah! This
Not tongue nor pen can show;
Thy love of Jesus, what it is
None but his loved ones know.

Jesus, our only joy be thou,
As thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus, be thou our glory now
And through eternity.

Our corps officers are on holiday this week, so our worship this morning was led by Allan Scott (Corps Mission Secretary).

Allan asked us how quickly we packed away Christmas 2025? Now that we're into 2026, do we still remember that Jesus was born in Bethlehem for you and me? We must not just pack away Christmas and go back to our everyday lives, instead we must say, Jesus, don't just be born in Bethlehem, but be born in me, again.

The band concluded our worship by playing the hymn tune 'When the Music Fades (The heart of Worship)'.

When the music fades
All is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that's of worth
That will bless Your heart
I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus

King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath
I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it

Today we share a recording of 'I Love You, Lord' from our most recent CD, 'Immeasurable'.

I love you, Lord
And I lift my voice
To worship You
Oh, my soul, rejoice!
Take joy my King
In what You hear
Let it be a sweet, sweet sound
In Your ear

We would be delighted if you want to share with us in worship this morning (or any Sunday), either in-person, or by watching our live stream which will start at 10:15: https://www.youtube.com/live/dabdahenq3k?si=sbj8AyA3Q2Jd6s3V
