The Ulster Consort is delighted to present its first two concerts of its 2024 Season. It will perform its programme 'O great mystery' - music for Christmas and Epiphany - in two contrasting venues: St. Bernadette's Parish, Rosetta, Belfast (a stunning modern church with a stunning stained glass, beautiful sculpture, and a glorious acoustic) and the historic St Columb's Cathedral within the walled city of Derry/Londonderry (marking the group's first visit to this city).

In this meditative and uplifting programme, the Missa 'O magnum mysterium' of Spanish Renaissance composer, Victoria, is complemented by 20th century and contemporary works by Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Howard Skempton, Matthew Owens, and Warlock.

Tickets are available at the door, or in advance via Eventbrite (see links below). The concerts last an hour (the Belfast concert being one of the '60 minutes at 6' series; please note that the St Columb's concert begins at 7pm).

The churches on the road have teamed up again to offer you a Christmas trail of puzzles, live nativity characters, fun and family time. Let me know if you're interested, and if you'd prefer to do the trail in your own time over the week, or with the nativity characters on the final Sunday. More details to follow closer to the time. Thank you!

Did you know that St Bernadette’s (which opened in 1967 and was designed by Belfast architect Brian Gregory) is widely regarded as one of the most striking and architecturally significant modern churches in Ireland, both the building itself and also the artwork within it? This is also recognised by its Listed Buildings classification which puts it in most important 10% of all listed buildings in Northern Ireland.

The annual European Heritage Open Days occur this coming weekend and as part of this programme St Bernadette’s will be open from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday 11th. As with all buildings opening for European Heritage Open Day, admission is free and all are welcome. There will be guides on hand to explain different aspects of the building and the meaning of the art and architecture. At 4pm there will be a short talk on the church windows, which were designed by the renowned glassmaker Dom Charles Norris of Buckfast Abbey and manufactured in workshops at the Abbey.

Please note that you should not attend if you feel unwell in any way. Two metre social distancing will apply and face coverings must be worn at all times when inside the building.

For those who have never been in the building and are interested in seeing the interior, there is a virtual 360-degree tour on the parish website. http://www.stbernadettesparish.org/?page_id=623

There will be different puzzles up around the Knockbreda area which you work your way around on whatever day and time suit you (within those dates!) and at your own pace. Statement by the Northern Catholic Bishops on the extension of the Covid-19 shut-down by the Northern Ireland Executive to 5 March 2021
22. JAN, 2021

We encourage parishes to continue to broadcast the celebration of Mass – and other devotions and prayer services – online and on other media, knowing that faith and prayer can be a tremendous support to individuals and society during these difficult times.
We ask for prayers for the sick, the bereaved and all those whose livelihoods have been particularly impacted by the pandemic. We keep especially in mind all health workers, carers, chaplains and other essential workers
Yesterday afternoon the Northern Ireland Executive took the unanimous decision to extend the current Covid-19 restrictions until Friday 5th March 2021. This decision was based on the strong recommendation of the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Scientific Advisor, as a result of the continued extremely high level of transmission of the Covid-19 virus throughout the community (which over these last four weeks had not reduced to the level that had been hoped for), along with the increasing numbers in hospital and intensive care.

In the light of this decision, and on the basis of the clear and unequivocal public health advice that people should continue to stay at home, the Northern Catholic Bishops have decided that, until 5 March (but subject to ongoing review in line with any change to the public health advice), the celebration of the Eucharist and other liturgies should continue to take place without the physical presence of the faithful. Marriage, funeral, baptismal liturgies and drive-in services may continue (subject to strict safety guidelines and regulations). Arrangements for recording and/or livestreaming and making individual visits for private prayer are also permissible in accordance with regulations. We encourage parishes, where possible, to continue to broadcast the celebration of Mass – and other devotions and prayer services – online and on other media, knowing that faith and prayer can be a tremendous support to individuals and society during these difficult times.

We once more make this decision reluctantly, conscious of the pain that not being able to gather for public worship causes for all the faithful, but in the hope that this period of sacrifice is inspired by the command of Jesus to love our neighbours and undertaken for the protection of life and health and for the Common Good.

We continue to ask for prayers for the sick, the bereaved and all those whose livelihoods have been particularly impacted by the pandemic. We keep especially in mind all health workers, carers, chaplains and other essential workers.

Dear Parishioners,
This Christmas we will celebrate the birth of Christ our Saviour in particularly challenging circumstances due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus continues to bring death and illness.

It had been our hope to have some Christmas Masses that would be open to the public. However, having taken soundings within the parish, spoken to some doctors, listened to what neighbouring parishes intend to do, and very conscious of the deteriorating public health situation, we have come to the difficult decision that Masses on Christmas Eve and Christian Day will NOT be open to the public, but will be available online via the parish we**am. This will be painful and will involve a huge sacrifice for all of us.

Parishioners should remember that the obligation to attend Mass at Christmas this year has been suspended. If parishioners wish, they could also choose to attend Mass on one day over the Christmas season, which continues up to the feast of the Baptism of the Lord on Sunday 10th January 2021.

Christmas Masses will be broadcast live and available online, so parishioners are encouraged to participate in a live-streamed Mass.

Christmas Eve
St Bernadette’s – 7pm
Holy Rosary – 9pm

Christmas Day
St Bernadette’s – 11am
Holy Rosary – 9am & 10:30am

All via parish Webcams
St Bernadette’s – stbernadettesparish.org/live
Holy Rosary – holyrosaryparishbelfast.net

We know that many people will be very disappointed, but we hope you understand the reasoning behind our decision. We thank you for your understanding, patience and support in these very challenging times.

Face coverings at Liturgical Celebrations

The most recent statements from the NI Executive regarding the more general use of face coverings (published on the NI-Direct Website) does not specifically mention churches but reads:
“From 10 August it will be mandatory to wear a face covering in a shop or shopping centre, or any indoor public space where it is not possible to maintain social distancing.”
The Diocese has sought further advice regarding how churches are to interpret this, and would now recommend that all persons attending liturgical celebrations be strongly encouraged to wear a face covering as an additional measure in helping to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Both will be streamed on the we**am - stbernadettesparish.org/live Please remember that we are operating at significantly reduced capacity due to COVID-19 regulations.
