The tea’s poured, gloves are pressed and collarettes are laid out across the city, just as they have been in Belfast homes for generations.

🙏The bowler hat, the white gloves and the Bible at the centre of it all.

Tomorrow, Monday 13th July, Belfast celebrates the Twelfth and the 336th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne.

And if you’re wondering why we walk on the 13th this year, it's because the Twelfth falls on a Sunday, and for our members worship comes before walking. That tells you something about this day. Faith is not an accessory, our faith is the heart of it.

⚔️The Twelfth commemorates the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and the civil and religious liberty that flowed from it.

The Boyne secured the Glorious Revolution, and with it the foundations of how these islands are governed to this day: the legacy of that is a monarchy under the law, a parliament that has met every year since 1689, no taxes without the people's consent, judges no government can dismiss, regular elections, a free press and the freedom to worship according to conscience ⚖️

When America wrote its Bill of Rights a century later, it borrowed the very words of 1689. These liberties belong to everyone, and that’s why we walk.

🎶The Twelfth is a day of thanksgiving, remembrance and celebration, of family and friendship, music and colour and pride in who we are.

To every member walking tomorrow: walk with pride and with dignity. You carry more than a collarette, you carry the story of the generations who walked before you.

To spectators, visitors and neighbours across our city and beyond - you’re very welcome. Whether the Twelfth is your own tradition or something you’ve never seen up close, come along, enjoy the day and ask us about it.

☀️ A warm and sunny Twelfth is on the way! 🟠

With temperatures expected to reach around 22°C, we encourage everyone attending tomorrow’s celebrations to take a few simple precautions.

Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and look out for family and friends as we all enjoy a safe and memorable Twelfth.

GREATER SHANKILL ACT

Shankill Cultural Festival Parade, Saturday 11th July.

The annual Festival parade takes place tomorrow, this year it includes the opening of this fantastic Siege of Derry Arch.

This year we would encourage as many members of the Apprentice Boys to take part. ABOD will parade directly behind the lead band from Brown Square, meeting 4:30pm for 5pm start.

Other loyal orders and associations welcome to parade as usual. This section of the parade will meet at Leisure Centre car park at 4:30pm and fall in behind the Apprentice Boys as they parade up the Shankill, all flags and banners welcome.

Around 6 bands taking part, children are encouraged to join in parade with their Band Poles, they can fall in at any point as the parade comes up the road.

As the parade reaches the new Arch there will be a Service of Dedication, most of which is a secret but we can promise it will be spectacular!

After the service the parade turns at Lawnbrook/Battenberg and parades back down the road to Moscow St.

Come along to the Shankill Road and join in the family friendly festivities, don’t be one of those people who regret not coming when it’s over!
