Alongside small grant scheme for children’s, youth and family ministry

The Presbyterian Children’s Society offer small grants to support congregations as they come alongside children, young people and families to show the love of Christ in a caring and practical way.

The following organisations have been selected as potential partners; however, congregations may also apply for funding for their own initiatives.

BLAZE AND Bible Society Northern Ireland

One of the amazing projects that the Bible Society are involved in at home is the Bibles for Babies project.

This project means that babies in Northern Ireland can receive a Bible Storybook when they are born, engagement activities as they turn 2, 3, and 4 and then on their 5th birthday, they are sent a full children’s Bible.

What an amazing opportunity to see God's Word being read by families across Northern Ireland and the potential for children's lives to be changed by hearing God's truth.

That is the power of placing God’s Word where life is lived.

Not global mission, but mission all the same!

Since the beginning of 2022, we've distributed 6,184 Storybook Bibles to families across Northern Ireland.

Every Storybook Bible creates opportunities for bedtime stories, family conversations and moments spent discovering God's Word together.

THE BOOKSHELF (6-8 YEARS)

All about the Bible by Alison Mitchell

Children are so incredibly inquisitive and are encouraged to learn and discover for themselves when they are in school. Having something that helps to answer their questions and investigate information from the Bible is also great to help them to develop their faith. This encyclopedia of Bible facts and information by Alison Mitchell from The Good Book Company should definitely help children aged 7+ years with their questions.

From questions about who wrote the Bible and how it is translated to information about Bible characters, heroes, kings and queens and all sorts of animals and insects, even the most curious children should have their questions answered!

The book starts with this description: This is a book about a book…a very unusual book!

This is a book which will not only help children to understand the Bible more, the most important book that they read in their Christian faith, but it also answers some of the questions or comments people make in criticism of the Bible and faith in God. Children need to understand more of these answers to help them stand up for their faith and to always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have (1 Peter 3:15).

This book follows on from All about Christmas and All about Bible Animals, helping children understand more about how the Bible is written while also growing their understanding of the incredible world and redemptive story that God has planned through his people throughout history.

THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR can bring many joys, positive experiences and possibilities. It can also be a very challenging and anxious time for our young people, whether negotiating the start of year 8, beginning GCSE or A levels, or coping with the trials of friendship politics.

As parents, it can be heart-breaking to see our children struggle with stress and anxiety, and we seek God’s help and wisdom. Axis is an organisation that equips parents for gospel-centred conversations with their teen about faith and culture. They have produced 2 guides for parents, designed to equip them to walk with their teenagers at stressful times:
• A Parent’s Guide to Anxiety
• A Parent’s Guide to a Struggling Teen

Both are available in web-based or downloadable forms and contain advice from experts and wisdom from Scripture that may give practical ideas for parents who are helping their children navigate some of the more stressful aspects of school, and life in general.

GLOBAL MISSION 🐝

Blaze and I were thinking this morning about how we could encourage children and families to support global mission this week.

This verse came to mind and the power of praying for others even when they are far away.

So this week, why not encourage children in your home and church to pray for those who live around the world and are following Jesus - some in very difficult situations 🙏🏽

THE BOOKSHELF (AGE 3-5 YEARS)

Do Great Things for God: Elisabeth Elliot by Ellen Vaughn

This is the sixteenth book in the Do Great Things for God series from The Good Book Company which tell the stories of people who have done some amazing things because of their faith in God.

This particular story is that of Elisabeth Elliot, a missionary to Ecuador with her husband, Jim. It tells the story of Elisabeth from a young child of missionary parents hearing stories of how God was working in the world to travelling to Ecuador to work as a missionary with her husband Jim to then carrying on his legacy after his death.

I asked a child who had read the book to tell me something about that they had read and thought of the book:
Elisabeth Elliot: even though her husband had died by a village which was violent and scared, her love for God was so strong that she went and taught them about Jesus, even though her husband had died trying to do the same thing. Her love was so strong for God that she even brought her daughter with her! I loved this book and would give it 10/10.

This is another great story for children to hear and also comes with free downloads from the website that can be used at home or in a children’s ministry setting.

THE BOOKSHELF (AGE 0-2 YEARS)

We're on a new year of Bookshelf recommendations. Each Friday, I will review a book here for a different age group from 0-11 years.

First up its My first ABC Book of Bible Verses by Jonathan Gibson.

Jonathan Gibson helps toddlers and pre-schoolers learn key Bible verses along with their A-B-Cs. Each letter of the alphabet has a bright and colourful page with a short Bible verse to learn by heart and a simple explanation to help understand the verse.

Parents, grandparents, and other adults will love using this book to teach the littlest ones foundational truths in a fun and engaging way. This book encourages the youngest children to learn verses in their little hearts and minds that help them to ground their young faith in God’s Word and guide them in the years to come. Children will learn who made them, why they need Jesus, how to become one of God’s children, what to do when they are scared and many more truths that the Bible can teach us.

FACEBOOK NAME CHANGE

You may have noticed over the summer that the name of the page has changed and we have a different coloured logo.

On 1st September, we fully amalgamated the PCI Children's Ministry and PCI Family Ministry pages so that all content will now appear here. We will also have some family ministry ideas with teens.
