We are delighted to welcome Nicola Brennan on to the Chaplaincy Team as Pastoral and Operations Manager!

A familiar face around the Chaplaincy, Nicola was a valued member of our community as a postgrad student, and later as a FOCUS missionary. We are so excited to be expanding our team here at Chaplaincy, and that Nicola will remain with us in this new role starting in September.

We are so proud of all that you have achieved, and it has been a privilege to accompany many of you during your time at Chaplaincy.

As part of our recent reopening celebrations, Archbishop Eamon Martin presented this year’s Macaulay and Ryan Prizes to two outstanding members of our Chaplaincy community.

The Macaulay Prize was awarded to Anna Rice, a final-year medical student and past pupil of Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newry, in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the life and mission of Chaplaincy, particularly through her leadership of the St Luke’s Guild and her voluntary service in Belize during her intercalated year.

The Ryan Prize was presented to Michael Loughran, a past pupil of St Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon, currently undertaking his engineering placement year. He was recognised for his academic excellence, especially in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, together with his developing entrepreneurial leadership.

It was a particular joy that both prizewinners come from communities within Archbishop Martin’s pastoral care. Congratulations to Anna and Michael on these richly deserved awards, and thank you for all you have contributed to Chaplaincy life.

Our Chaplain, Fr Dominic, writes in today’s Irish News on recent events in Belfast.

To all those who have come to Queen’s from near and far: you are welcome, you are valued, and our community is richer because of you.

"Homes have been attacked. Families have been intimidated. People with no connection whatsoever to the original incident have found themselves targeted because of the colour of their skin, the accent of their voice, or the country from which they came.

"Whatever else we may call it, that is wrong."

As the academic year drew to a close, we celebrated five students taking the next step in their faith journey.

Congratulations to Alice, Becca, Chiara, Clarissa and Michelle. Becca, Clarissa and Michelle were baptised, confirmed and received First Holy Communion, while Alice and Chiara were confirmed.

These celebrations bring to ten the number of students who have received sacraments through Chaplaincy this year, with James, Jared, Luca, Lukas and Torin at Christmas.

We were delighted to welcome Bishop Alan McGuckian SJ and to use our new baptismal sculpture for the first time, before ending the day with a joyful barbecue.

Please keep all of these students in your prayers as they continue to grow in faith and friendship with Christ.

Today, on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, we give thanks for the enduring presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and for the privilege of bearing His name in the Chapel of Corpus Christi at Queen’s.

One of the most moving moments of our recent reopening and altar dedication came after Holy Communion. As the Blessed Sacrament was carried in procession and reposed for the first time in the new tabernacle, the sanctuary lamp was lit once more, a simple yet profound sign that the Lord had returned to dwell among His people in this place.

As that moment unfolded, The Priests, themselves alumni of Queen’s, offered a beautiful rendition of Panis Angelicus. It was a moment of great reverence and gratitude: Christ present upon the altar, Christ present in the tabernacle, and a chapel once again centred on the Eucharistic Lord.

“Panis angelicus fit panis hominum” — the Bread of Angels becomes the bread of men.
