Lord, when we have been a long time at the side of the road
it is not easy to stand in front of everyone
and express what we really want for ourselves.

In today’s Gospel, the man asks Jesus what he must to inherit eternal life. Jesus recites the commandments to him, which the man well knows and practices, but the man knows in his heart, he is still desiring more.
Jesus senses his hunger and puts the radical challenge to him that he must rid himself of his attachment to wealth. The man is sad as this means letting go of his security and social status also, but Jesus challenging us all to let go of our attachments so we can fully rely on God and serve others. Our Christian vocation is more than a set of commandments.

In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus say, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.” But who are the ‘little children’ that Jesus is referring to? This story must not be limited to one meaning, but are for all who are not considered important in our community. Jesus wants us to be welcoming, reverent and to see the uniqueness to these people, and in following on from last week’s Gospel, our church is for more than the ‘in’ crowd.
