A Prayer for the Church That Stayed the Same

They polished every pew with care,
and warmed the cups with tea;
they smiled at every face that came
and called it ministry.

They sang the hymns they’d always sung,
each verse in proper place,
yet somehow left the stranger cold
while speaking much of grace.

The same names held the ancient keys,
the same hands led the way;
the same small circle kept the old,
yet prayed for change one day.

They feared the creak of opened doors,
the draft of something new,
as if the wind of God Himself
might scatter all they knew.

So softer souls learned to grow still,
and healing hearts grew tired,
while those who came with fire to serve
left singed and
uninspired.

Yet not from malice came the frost,
nor cruelty severe,
but from preserving familiarity
that sheltered pain and fear.

For churches rarely die from change,
nor fall in one great flame;
more often they grow dim and close
by choosing to stay
the same.

Lord, breathe upon all guarded hearts,
unbolt what we defend;
make welcome more than just a word,
make culture learn to bend.

And where we clutch what once was good,
yet keep new life at bay,
teach us resurrection needs
the stone to roll away.
