Presbyterian Church in Ireland

Presbyterian Church in Ireland The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is committed to bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to people of all ages across Ireland and the wider world. Rev.

The Presbyterian form of Christian faith is best described as 'Reformed' with its strong emphasis on the Sovereignty of God, the Kingship of Christ and the authority of the Bible. Preaching the Word of God is central to Presbyterian worship services that are set amongst a mixture of prayer and praise. There is no fixed liturgy in Presbyterian services of worship. Prayers and hymns, psalms and para

phrases, Scripture readings and sermons are adapted to the needs of the occasion. The word 'Presbyterian' itself describes the form of Church government, which emphasises the individual and corporate responsibility of members. Ministers and members share in the organising and running of every aspect of the Church's work. In the Presbyterian Church in Ireland this is undertaken at three levels:

Congregational (local)
Presbytery (regional)
General Assembly (denominational)

The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the Church. One of its roles is to elect the Moderator, the chief public representative of the Church who serves for one year. The current Moderator is Rt. Dr. John Kirkpatrick. The Moderator, however, is not the ‘head of the church’. The Code, or constitution of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland clearly states that ‘The Lord Jesus Christ is the sole King and Head of the Church…’

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland has over 225,000 members who belong to 539 congregations. PCI is the largest Protestant denomination in Northern Ireland. The Church's administrative heart is Assembly Buildings, which is located at Fisherwick Place in Belfast.

🇮🇪 Council for Mission in Ireland
This week, the General Assembly considered a report from the Council for Mission in Ireland plans regarding the South West of Ireland. The report outlined priorities focused on strengthening existing congregations in the area and exploring new mission opportunities in the city of Limerick. Pray for the practical outworking of this report in the coming months.
✝ Council for Mission in Ireland
Give thanks for the office-bearers of the Council for Mission in Ireland who delivered its report to the General Assembly this week. Pray particularly for Council convener, Rev Dr Ben Walker and Council Secretary, Rick Hill, that God would guide them in their ongoing work.

NEW MODERATOR INSTALLED
Rev Dr Richard Kerr has been installed as the new Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Dr Kerr has chosen his theme for the year, ‘For God so loved…”. His chaplains are Rev Dr Karen Campbell and Rev James Rogers.

During his opening address, the new Moderator spoke of the events of the past few days saying, “We rightly condemn the incident in North Belfast on Monday night. It was horrific, barbaric and evil. We must also condemn the actions of those who would manipulate people’s concerns and indiscriminately tar whole communities with one brush, causing fear and consternation among ethnic minorities.

“The PSNI find themselves caught in the middle, as they seek to maintain law and order. Our prayers are with them and all those in the emergency services who have displayed such courage. The Gospel calls us, not to take sides, but to work for a kingdom that brings hope and life, and reconciles people to God and to each other. And the vision we work towards is of every nation, tribe, people and language, worshipping God together. This is who we are!”

Dr Kerr has been the minister of Templepatrick Presbyterian Church in County Antrim for over 25 years. Born in 1965, Dr Kerr was ordained as minister of Templepatrick in 2005 and has been his only church. He was brought up in Raphoe, County Donegal before leaving aged 17 for agricultural college in County Tipperary, becoming a dairy farm manager near Dundalk in County Louth aged 21. He and his wife Brenda served together in Malawi for 11 years.

🙏 Let's Pray 🙏
✝ General Council
The General Council will report on several areas this afternoon, such as communications and United Appeal, amongst a number of others. Pray for those bringing the reports, that they will be able to convey with clarity and grace their reports and for those listening to be granted understanding and insight.
🌎 Council for Global Mission
Pray that through the presentation and debate of the Council for Global Mission report this morning, God’s heart for PCI’s denominational engagement in global mission would be very evident, not least the extent to which PCI should continue to be a ‘sending’ church. Pray that the tenor of the debate would set in motion ripples of encouragement throughout the Council, the Mission Dept staff team, and especially PCI’s global mission workers currently serving in the name of Christ beyond the shores of Ireland.
