Like everyone who has struggled to understand the horror of yesterday’s knife attack in North Belfast, my prayers are for the victim of the crime and his family and neighbours who must have been deeply affected by what they have witnessed. Please join me in praying for both physical and psychological healing for all who have been impacted.
I pay tribute to those who saved life of the man who was attacked - those who bravely intervened and the PSNI and paramedics who attended the scene.
No-one should be subject to such behaviour and it has no place on our streets. In the days ahead the criminal justice system will deal with the individual who committed this terrible crime. As a community we are united in saying this behaviour has no place among us.
I join others in adding my voice to the appeal to all people of goodwill to avoid any behaviour that would bring fear onto our streets in the wake of this attack. We will do nothing to make our country a better place if others suffer violence or intimidation. There will be those who will seek to take advantage of our righteous anger at what has happened on our streets, but we must ensure that our voices of protest are heard in ways that do not destroy other lives.
Jesus urged us to love one another and reminded us that our neighbour is anyone who is in need of help, not just the person who is like us.
It’s my prayer that we will all consider our words and our actions very carefully in these difficult days, and may we know God’s grace as we seek to share Christ’s love and compassion with every individual regardless of the race or creed. In that way, we will contribute to making Northern Ireland a kinder, safer place for all its people.
