The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity
Sunday 31st May

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus answers the question, “What is the extent of God’s love?”. He says, “God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life.” The utter self-giving of God’s love is summed up in those few words.

Pentecost Sunday
Sunday 24th May 2026

Today, Pentecost Sunday, is also a great birthday occasion on which we celebrate that day when the Apostles finally caught the fire of love; the fire of enthusiasm and zeal; the fire of conviction! The Holy Spirit filled them with courage, enabling them to meet opposition, and to proclaim the Gospel, not only with words, but above all by lives transfigured by conviction (cf EG 259).

The Ascension of the Lord
Sunday 17th May

The Feast of the Ascension helps us to understand this extraordinary interlocking relationship between heaven and earth. The Scripture tells us that, “(Jesus) was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight.” But we must interpret these words with the mind of the evangelist. “Lifted up” doesn't mean that Jesus ascended to somewhere “up there beyond the clouds”; rather, he entered into another dimension, into God's dimension, that which we call heaven.

6th Sunday of Easter
Sunday 10th May

Today, especially, but in every Mass, we celebrate Holy Communion, and this is the recognition that we are members of a body, the body of Christ! Christian faith cannot be lived in isolation from other Christians. I cannot be who God means me to be on my own, as an individual, but only in relationship with others, within a community. This is the understanding that lies at the heart of our coming together for Mass. Here, at one with Christ and my neighbour, I become who God means me to be. Together, with Christ, we can make a difference in society, be a beacon of hope. Pope Francis once said, “we strive to light a fire in the heart of the world” (EG 271).

5th Sunday of Easter
Sunday 3rd May

Philip was one of the two disciples mentioned in today’s Gospel, the other being Thomas. Philip wanted to see God, and so he asked Jesus, “Lord, let us see the Father and then we shall be satisfied”. The desire to know God, to see the face of God, is deeply rooted in every human heart. Philip represents those who, from of every generation, seek to know God.

Fourth Sunday of Easter
26th Sunday in O T

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus, in an obvious reference to himself, speaks of “the shepherd of the flock” whom “the sheep follow because they know his voice”. This voice is not only recognised but it is also trusted, and this trust is the central theme of the Responsorial Psalm, “there is nothing I shall want….near restful waters he leads me….he guides me along the right path…no evil would I fear…goodness and kindness shall follow me”. Jesus is, for each of us, the loving friend, always by our side with untiring affection, patience, and self-giving.

3rd Sunday of Easter
Sunday 19th April

The Lord Jesus, having joined the two disciples on their way to Emmaus, and having listened to their laments about “the things that had been happening” in Jerusalem during that first Easter weekend, finally, seemingly somewhat exasperated, exclaimed, “You foolish men!” Of course, this response implies that both disciples were men. But here we encounter the problem of the translation of original texts into English. A more correct translation would be, “Oh, how foolish you are! So slow to believe all that the prophets said!” While it may seem that such a translation doesn’t make much of a difference, it does open the possibility that the person with Cleopas was a woman. And given the cultural mores of the time, in such a situation, she could have only been his wife.

2nd Sunday of Easter
Divine Mercy Sunday

On that first Easter Sunday evening, the disciples were gathered in a room behind locked doors. The experience of Good Friday had left them a shattered, fear-filled group; not only were their hopes dashed, but remorse had gouged a deep wound in their hearts – they had abandoned and denied the one they had called “Lord and Master”. But now, to their amazement, “Jesus came and stood among them….and showed them his hands and his side” – and in doing so touched their wounded hearts; his word, the balm that healed their remorseful hearts, “Peace be with you”, he said.
