National Day of Reflection at London Road…

Everyone who is able to do so is invited on their daily exercise outing to go past the church and bring a ribbon with them during the day on Tuesday 23rd March and tie it to the postered fence as a sign of remembrance of our “collective loss”.

If you cannot get to the church safely during your daily outing, but would like to tie a ribbon on to the fence in remembrance for someone's loss, please let us know and we can do this for you.

We shall also have one of our large candles on the hall windows lit up in remembrance. If you light a candle at home, please do send us a photo and we shall flood our page in remembrance.

Thank you in advance for taking a moment to reflect on Tuesday with us.

National Day of Reflection: Tuesday 23rd March

This Tuesday marks the first anniversary of the introduction of the initial Lockdown caused by Covid-19. Perhaps, back then, few of us could imagine how long the disease was going to keep us under such severe restrictions on our normal lifestyle. We could also scarcely have foreseen how many people would become seriously ill and die. The total number of deaths worldwide is currently about 2.7 million, including over 125,000 in the United Kingdom.
As we all know, a vast number of people have sadly passed away without the comfort of family and friends alongside them. Funerals have been so restricted that countless families and friends were unable to say goodbye as they would have wished to. Many people are living with the long-term effects on their health.

A National Day of Reflection has been called for this Tuesday and several suggestions are being offered as to how we can each mark this anniversary day.
We are invited, if it is possible for us, to join in a minute’s silence at 12 noon to remember the millions of people who have been bereaved, and if we personally know anyone who has suffered a loss in the pandemic perhaps we could make contact with them to show our care, by sending them a card or giving them a call. We could light a candle or shine a light that day in remembrance. If we have experienced a loss ourselves we are encouraged to share our stories with friends and talk about the pain we have known. It can be a great solace to do so.
And as we look ahead, the website gives us a further suggestion, saying “As well as reflecting on the grief of the past year, the National Day of Reflection is also about hoping for a brighter future. Sowing seeds in the hope of beautiful blooms in months to come is one way to do this.”

Creator God, you made us in your image
to be your people, wherever we are and wherever we go.
This coming week, whatever we experience, wherever we find ourselves,
help us to know that you are with us – guiding, revealing and sustaining – always.
Amen.

Today is Saint Valentine’s Day. The following prayer of thanksgiving – its author, Ian Fosten, entitled it ‘When the ordinary becomes extraordinary’ – reminds us to be thankful for extraordinary love which is experienced in very ordinary things. We can also link this with our reflection on the ordinary human Jesus being extraordinarily transfigured in divine glory.

Let us pray:
Dear God,
in my thankfulness this day
may I not overlook how frequently
your remarkable gift of love is found
in actions that are small and commonplace.
May I receive love in a welcome smile,
and return it that way too;
may moments of patient waiting
give time to hold others, fondly, in my thoughts;
may necessary journeys and routine tasks
be seen as space and time to think, pray and give;
may I learn afresh that love in practice
need not be always worthy and purposeful…
but sometimes may be frivolous and fun. Amen.
