LENT IN THE LIGHT OF THE SAINTS

Our parish priest, Father Richard, is hosting sessions on the great saints of the Chuch.

The witness of the saints to Christ Jesus has always been embraced by the Church. Their example, their presence in the Church, their beauty and inspiration, gives us light and helps to nurture the Christian life in us.

Join us in the portacabin at 19:15 on:
- Thursday 26th February (St. Thomas Aquinas)
- Thursday 5th March (St. Catherine of Siena)
- Thursday 12th March (St. Ignatius of Loyola)
- Thursday 26th March (St. John Henry Newman)

We hope to see you there! 🙏

In our confessional here at Christ the King, we have a small painting of Rembrandt’s Return of the Prodigal Son.

During Lent, we are invited to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where we will be welcomed just as the prodigal son was returning to the Father.

By participating in confession, we acknowledge our sins, seek God's mercy, and receive His forgiveness, allowing us to better prepare our hearts for the celebration of Easter.

Through confession, we receive grace that strengthens us against future temptations, helping us live more fully in accordance with God's will. This sacrament is an essential part of our spiritual journey during Lent, emphasizing our need for God's mercy and our desire for a renewed life in Christ.

Our confession times are on Fridays 11:05am to 11:45am and Saturdays 10am – 10:45am, or by appointment.

🕊️ Ash Wednesday: We Begin Again 🕊️

Today, the Church gently places ashes on our foreheads and speaks words we all need to hear: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” and “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a sacred season of grace, mercy, and renewal. It is not about perfection, but about returning: returning to prayer, to simplicity, to the heart of the Gospel, and to the loving arms of the Father.

The ashes we wear are not a badge of honour, but a humble confession: we need God. They remind us that life is fragile, time is precious, and love is what lasts.

As we enter these 40 days, the Church invites us to pray more deeply, fast more intentionally, and give more generously, not as a burden, but as a pathway to freedom and joy.

Where is God inviting you to begin again this Lent?
What might you let go of so that Christ can do something new in you?

May this Lent be a holy journey - honest, hopeful, and rooted in love.

✝️ “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” (Psalm 51)

A very happy feast day to one and all

A very happy feast day to one and all

Today, Sunday, November 23, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe; also known as the Feast of Christ the King.

Christ the King is one of the most important titles of Jesus. Even though Jesus Christ was not a king in the earthly sense, He is the divine King of the Universe, who unites all of creation with the Father. As St. Paul tells us,

1 Corinthians 15:25-28 For [Christ] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For God has put all things in subjection under his feet. . . . When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to Him who put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

As a young nun, discouraged at one point by the persistence of certain sins in her life, St Teresa of Avila decided to give up praying altogether until she managed to control her weakness:

“I never thought I would cease being determined to return to prayer – but I was waiting to be very purified of sin. Oh, how wrong was the direction I was going with this hope! The devil would have kept me hoping until judgement day.”

It was a lesson Teresa never forgot. No one, she declares, who has begun to practice prayer should become discouraged, thinking, if I fall back into sin, it will be better for me not to go on practising prayer. On the contrary, Teresa insists, things will become much worse should prayer be abandoned. If, however, people keep faith with the practice of prayer, they can be confident that, in time, prayer will lead them safely to “the harbour of life”.
