General Synod 2026 will welcome a special guest this year, with the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion attending the three-day meeting in Stirling.

As Secretary General, the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo, serves as an ambassador for the Communion’s member churches, and oversees the work of the Anglican Communion Office (ACO), which is the official Secretariat to the worldwide communion. He will be the first Secretary General to attend General Synod in 21 years.

This year’s General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church takes place at the University of Stirling campus from 11 to 13 June, and Bishop Poggo will address members on the final day, when he will discuss the Anglican Communion’s relationship with its members.

“I am delighted that the Rt Rev Anthony Poggo will be joining us for our meeting of the General Synod,” said the Primus. “Bishop Poggo and I meet regularly at Primates and Communion engagements, and the Secretary General indicated a desire to visit General Synod. I was happy to extend an invitation to him.

“He is coming to share with us his view of the life of the Anglican Communion, and to hear what the communion means to us here in Scotland.

“As a church we treasure our membership, identity, and unique history within the Communion and I really look forward to sharing that with Bishop Anthony during his time with us in Scotland.”

Looking forward to his visit, the Secretary General said: “Every Church in the Anglican Communion is valued for its individuality and unique passions. I am greatly looking forward to spending time in fellowship with laypersons, clergy and leadership from the Scottish Episcopal Church in the coming weeks and I thank Primus Mark for inviting me to observe the Church’s synod.

“I am particularly excited to learn more about their ongoing ministry and priorities for the province going forward.”

The Secretary General and ACO staff work to support the instruments of the Anglican Communion, which are the the Anglican Consultative Council, Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primates’ Meeting and the Lambeth Conference. The team is currently preparing for the 19th in-person meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council, ACC-19, which will meet in Belfast June-July, hosted by the Church of Ireland.

The last Secretary General of the Anglican Communion to attend General Synod was the Rev Canon Kenneth Kieron, who was a guest at the 2005 General Synod meeting held in Glasgow.

Big event coming up at the weekend with our Hidden Gardens Day. Don't worry, the gardens are all that hidden. We have a map which we'll give you for £5 to serve as your ticket round all 15 of them and free tea and coffee and cake in the hall whenever you decide to put your feet up and talk about your Delphiniums and Agapanthus. Tickets from the church office (open 9am-2pm every day this week) or on that day from the gardens, but you need to know where they are, so maybe they are a wee bit hidden...

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

As we continue beyond these 11 days of prayer, may we carry this same spirit of faith and expectation into the week ahead.

Amen.

Day 11 - Pentecost - The Spirit of Power ✨

Today, let us pray that the Holy Spirit would come afresh, filling us with God’s love and drawing our Five closer to Him.

Almighty God,
Your ascended Son has sent us into the world to preach the good news of Your kingdom: inspire us with Your Spirit and fill our hearts with the fire of Your love, that all who hear Your Word may be drawn to You, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen 🙏

Day 10 - The Spirit Through Generations ✨

Today, let us pray that the Holy Spirit would pour out faith across every generation and draw our Five into God’s family.

We ask that You send the Holy Spirit as a holy offering to the holy church.
As we assemble, give to all the saints the fullness of the Holy Spirit for the confirmation of true faith so that we may praise and glorify You through Your Son, Jesus Christ, through whom glory and honour to the Father and the Son with the Holy Spirit in Your holy church are Yours now and forever!

Amen 🙏

Day 9 - The Spirit of Evangelism ✨

Today, let us pray that the Holy Spirit would help us respond to God’s prompting and become faithful witnesses to our Five.

Lord,
grant that I may always allow myself to be guided by You,
always follow Your plans, and perfectly accomplish Your Holy Will.
Help me respond to the slightest prompting of Your Grace,
so that I may be Your trustworthy instrument for Your honour.
May Your Will be done in time and in eternity by me, in me, and through me.

Amen 🙏

Day 8 - The Spirit of Empowerment ✨

Today, let us pray that the Holy Spirit would empower us to reflect Christ’s love and hope to our Five.

We beseech thee, Master, to be our helper and protector.
Save the afflicted among us; have mercy on the lowly; raise up the fallen; appear to the needy; heal the ungodly; restore the wanderers of Thy people; feed the hungry; ransom our prisoners; raise up the sick; comfort the faint-hearted.

Amen 🙏
