Hope Community Church, Basingstoke

Hope Community Church, Basingstoke We're a Christian church located in the centre of Basingstoke. We are a group of people from a variety of nationalities and backgrounds.

None of us are perfect, in fact we are all 'work-in-progress', but we are committed to each other and to following Jesus. We have become Christians and wish to live out their faith together. As a church we are part of Basingstoke Community Churches, and we are involved with the other churches in Basingstoke. her. We do that because we believe God does not want us to be on our own, but to be part of a vibrant community. We aim to be like a family, where everyone is valued for who they are - and for who God has made them. We are all 'work in progress'! None of us are perfect, in fact being a Christian is learning how to live your life in a way which pleases God. We are finding out together that as God changes our lives we in turn can bring hope and transformation to those around us. We want Jesus to be at the centre of everything we do. In all our diversity, we are united by our love for him. We believe that church is not just about meeting on a Sunday, so we run a variety of midweek groups too. Our faith is to be lived out in our day-to-day lives; at home, work, school, college, gym or at the

We meet every Sunday at 10:30am at The Sarum Hill Centre, Sarum Hill, RG21 8SR

Getting together is a strong visual reminder that all ages, abilities, nationalities and backgrounds are united in Jesus. We will usually sing together songs of praise and worship led by a music group. There is freedom for individuals to bring their own prayers, and to share what God is saying. We will regularly pray, share updates on church life and have some form of Bible teaching (which we trust brings alive the truth and meaning of the Bible in a relevant and contemporary way!). We provide a crèche, groups for children (called kidzaloud) and for young people. Our gatherings are fairly informal. On occasions we stay for a shared lunch together.

We don’t eat out very often, but when we do, we love to go to Côte Brasserie. They are a chain of French style restaurants and our local one is very popular.

My wife and I decided to go there as a treat to celebrate my birthday. We arrived and were seated on a bustling Friday night.

As we enjoyed our food we spotted some friends enjoying a meal across the restaurant, and had a brief chat with them.

When we had finished we asked for the bill, and the waitress told us that it had been paid for! We were speechless, as this has never happened to us before. So we simply got up and left!

We wondered if it may have been the people we saw, but to this day, we do not know if it was them or not? This was a random act of kindness, that quite simply blew us away!

The book of Acts, in the Bible, records what happened after Jesus returned to heaven, showing what His disciples did next.

On one occasion, Peter and John healed a man lame from birth, who used to beg outside the Temple in Jerusalem. This remarkable miracle did not go unnoticed by the Religious authorities, who questioned them…

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: ‘Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed’.
Acts 4:8-10 The NIV Bible

Peter and the other disciples had experienced a powerful infilling of the Holy Spirit after Jesus returned to heaven. This changed and empowered them to speak boldly about Jesus and to perform miracles, just like Jesus did.

I believe that the same Holy Spirit is still around today – changing and empowering people. I have experienced that personally and seen it in others too.

The Holy Spirit dwells within us, helping us to live for God. He also prompts and empowers us to talk about Jesus and to do what Jesus did.

Today, let me invite you to ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit, and to follow His leading into ‘acts of kindness’…

God bless 😀

We are in the middle of an unexpected heatwave! What is so remarkable is the timing. Things began to warm up at the start of the school half term, which included a Bank Holiday Weekend, which was the hottest ever!

Thousands headed to the coast, whilst those who stayed at home enjoyed BBQs and hot and uncomfortable nights, unable to sleep!

I struggled on my weekend long run as by 9am it was already too hot! I got slower and slower as I covered the 10 miles, and when I got home drank plenty of water to rehydrate.

To be honest, it’s all a bit too much for me. I’ve avoided being out in the sun as much as possible, and I’ve not slept too well either. Everything just seems that little bit harder.

There are things in life that challenge all of us, and extreme heat is one for me! I have been reading about the life of David in the Bible. He went through various challenges in his lifetime.

On one occasion, he was a fugitive, and the town where he was living had been raided by his enemies, whilst he was not there. They had burned it and kidnapped the women and children.

When David’s men discovered this, they were highly distressed, and because they had been away with David at the time of the attack, some wanted to kill him. So what did David do? The Bible says…

But David found strength in the Lord his God.
1 Samuel 30:6 The NIV Bible

This is great and encouraging, as it teaches us that when we face challenges that we should be like David. However, it got me thinking, how do we find strength in God when we encounter difficult times? Here are two top tips:

Remember God’s faithfulness and promises – I wonder if David looked back over his life and the times when God had been there for him and helped him. When things are tough, look back and see when God was with you, and recall the promises of God that are in the Bible.

Seek God – The next verse tells us what David did, he sought God’s will! David pressed into God and asked what he should do. God spoke clearly and David did what God said. When you face challenges, don’t take things into your own hands, instead bring the situation before God and ask Him what to do, then be obedient to it.

God bless😎

Last week I conducted a wedding. It was a wonderful, joyous occasion for a few reasons…

The groom was a young man whose family have been part of our church for many years. He has two sisters, both of whom I took their weddings, so I completed the set!

The bride was from India, having moved to the UK a few years ago. She lives in Essex where she is a member of a vibrant church.

The service was a collaboration of two churches, sharing the vows, preaching, praying and worship band.

The marriage and reception was a celebration of English and Indian cultures demonstrated in what people wore, what we ate, and how people danced.

The biggest surprise of the night was seeing the groom dancing ‘Bollywood’ style! Knowing what he is like, this was unexpected and a delightful shock.

This marriage had certainly changed him, and it was a joy and revelation to see him ‘transformed’.

At one point, in the Old Testament, Israel asked God for a king and he gave them Saul. Something amazing happened to him…

When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying. When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, ‘What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?’
1 Samuel 10:10-11 The NIV Bible

Saul was changed when he encountered God’s Holy Spirit. When God came upon him, something happened that was beyond the natural realm – it was supernatural!

The same is true today. When people encounter God, something supernatural happens, and change occurs.

Over the years I have seen this in my life, and in others in our church. It’s lovely to see people change and become more like Jesus.

God promised that His Holy Spirit will live in us, and He is the one who can transform into the person God intended us to be.

God bless😀
