The latest charity to benefit from North Devon Crematorium's role in a national metal recycling scheme is North Devon Hospice.

A cheque for £17,000 was presented to the hospice at the crematorium on Thursday, 16 April. The donation has been generated from the proceeds of the recycling scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICMM), which enables metals from cremated remains to be safely recycled.

The money will go towards North Devon Hospice's ongoing work in providing expert 24-hour care to those facing life-limiting illnesses, both at the hospice in Barnstaple and in patients' homes, and giving emotional support for their families.

Local bereavement charity Families in Grief is the latest group to benefit from North Devon Crematorium's role in a national metal recycling scheme.

A cheque for £10,000 was presented to the charity on Tuesday, 13 January. The donation has been generated from the proceeds of the recycling scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICMM), which enables metals from cremated remains to be safely recycled.

Families in Grief supports bereaved children, young people and their families across North Devon and Torridge who are navigating grief, offering a range of age-appropriate support, including one-to-one sessions, group activities and family days. The support provided is free of charge, and the charity works with children and young people up to the age of 25.

Councillor Helen Walker, Chair of the North Devon Crematorium Joint Committee, said: "We are delighted to be able to present Families in Grief with such a fantastic amount of money. Grief is such a complex process, and the support they provide to local children, young people and families to help them navigate it is of such a great benefit to our communities - I have no doubt the money will be well spent.

Chris Walker, CEO at Families in Grief, said: "We're absolutely delighted to receive such a generous donation from North Devon Crematorium. Support from our local community makes everything we do possible, and this gift will help us to continue our work with bereaved families across North Devon and Torridge.
"Last year, we supported more than 200 children and young people, and demand for our services is increasing year-on-year. As we approach our charity's 20th anniversary, we're so grateful to all the fundraisers and donors who have given generously over the years and look forward to supporting more families in 2026 and beyond."

Works to improve energy efficiency at North Devon Crematorium are now complete.

New solar panels have been installed on the roof of the Barnstaple crematorium's Rowan Chapel. The new solar panels are expected to significantly reduce the crematorium's carbon footprint, supporting both North Devon and Torridge district councils' ongoing commitment to more efficient and environmentally friendly operations.

The installation works were completed by local contractors Cook Electrical, with Expedite Building Services providing assistance on the project. Works took place during the crematorium's bi-annual service in November to avoid any disruption to services.

By generating renewable energy on-site, the crematorium will benefit from lower electricity costs and improved environmental performance.
The £80,000 project was funded from the crematorium's budget management reserve.

Chair of the North Devon Crematorium Joint Committee, Councillor Helen Walker, said: "We are delighted to see the completion of this project, which makes the crematorium more sustainable and cost-effective and contributes to a greener future for North Devon and Torridge.
"Our thanks go to Cook Electrical and Expedite Building Services for their excellent work and support in delivering this array, and to the project team who have ensured the work has been undertaken with no disruption to services."
