Barnsley Church of the Nazarene
BE STRONG IN THE GRACE OF CHRIST

BIBLE STUDY

Passage: 2 Timothy 2
Key Outcomes
Revd. Dr. Osahon Jeremie I. Ogbeiwi led a Bible study on 2 Timothy chapter 2 from Manchester during pastors' summer school, focusing on endurance as the central theme for being strong in Christ's grace. The study emphasized three professional models (soldier, athlete, farmer) and established practical discipleship principles for church growth.

Main Teaching Points
Core Message: Be Strong in Grace
• Primary theme: Christians must reveal strength through endurance, perseverance, and maintaining faith through hardship.
• Grace defined: The grace of salvation that believers must protect and not lose during their spiritual journey to heaven.
• Central word: "Endure" appears repeatedly throughout the chapter as the key requirement for winning heaven.
Discipleship Strategy: Pass It On (Verse 2)
• Networking principle: Entrust the gospel to reliable people who can teach others, creating exponential growth.
• Mathematical model: Starting with one person, weekly multiplication (1→2→4→8) could transform church attendance within a year.
• Church growth formula: "Each one win one" – if every member brings one person weekly, the church would need physical expansion within a year.

Three Professional Models (Verses 3-6)
Soldier characteristics:
• Endures hardship without complaint.
• Does not entangle himself in civilian affairs during wartime.
• Focuses solely on pleasing the commanding officer.
Athlete requirements:
• Undergoes rigorous training with self-control.
• Competes according to rules to receive the crown.
• Will be denied victory if rules are not followed, even with many souls won.
Farmer qualities:
• Hard-working to be first to partake of crops.
• Demonstrates perseverance through difficult agricultural labour.
Common thread: All three professions require endurance through hardship to achieve their goals.
Christ and Paul as Examples (Verses 7-13)
• Jesus' endurance: Suffered the journey to the cross without giving up, though God allowed His suffering.
• Paul's testimony: Endured chains and imprisonment but emphasised: "the Word of God is not chained."
• Faithful saying: "If we died with Him, we shall also live with Him; if we endure, we shall also reign with Him."
• Warning: Denying Christ leads to being denied; however, God remains faithful even if believers become faithless.
• Key insight: Serving God benefits the believer, not God – stopping service diminishes the person, not God's nature.

Seeking God's Approval (Verses 14-18, 23-26)
Study and discernment:
• Command: "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
• Purpose: Distinguish truth from error to avoid deception.
• False teachers cited: Hymenaeus and Philetus taught resurrection had already occurred, causing believers to abandon holy living.

Behaviour requirements:
• Critical mandate: "The servant of the Lord must not quarrel".
• Application: Applies to all servants of God, not just pastors – quarrelsomeness is incompatible with ministry.
• Instead, be: Gentle, able to teach, patient, and kind to everyone.
• Avoid: Foolish arguments, stupid debates, and profane babblings that increase ungodliness.

God's foundation (Verse 19):
• Seal: "The Lord knows those who are His."
• Requirement: "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity".
• Implication: People cannot deceive God; departing from sin proves genuine belonging to God.

Vessels in God's House (Verses 20-22)
• Principle: Different vessels serve different purposes in a great house – some for honour, some for dishonour.
• Purification required: To be a vessel for honourable use, believers must purify themselves.
• Specific instructions: Flee youthful lusts; pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.

Participant Engagement
Outreach Experiences Shared
• Jean: Witnessed to a chap who promised to attend church but didn't come; however, he heard the message and may have passed it on.
• Mirabel: Attempted to bring a single mother who faces transportation difficulties and needs pickup/drop-off arrangements.
• Rosemary: Tells people about church and prays for them; believes they will come when God touches their hearts at the right time.

Key Responses
• Grace of endurance: Participants identified the grace as perseverance, maintaining faith through difficulties.
• God's grace components: Love, mercy, and peace that help believers endure.

Decisions Made
• Church commitment: The congregation should adopt "each one, win one" as a discipleship principle.
• Transportation support: The church will arrange pickup/drop-off for individuals who need it to attend services.

Practical Applications Emphasised
• Verse 2 strategy: Pass the gospel to people capable of teaching others, enabling exponential growth.
• Verse 15 requirement: Study Scripture diligently to gain God's approval and correctly handle truth – to be able to teach and discern truth from error.
• Verse 19 seal: Demonstrate genuine faith by departing from all forms of wickedness or sin.
• Verse 24 mandate: Eliminate quarrelsomeness from your character as a non-negotiable servant quality.

Pending Confirmation
• Implementation timeline for structured "each one, win one" outreach program
• Transportation coordination system for members needing rides to services

Action Items
• Mirabel: Inform the single mother that the church will arrange transportation for her attendance 34
• All participants: Reflect on how to reveal strength in Christ's grace through personal endurance.
• All members: Identify one reliable person to disciple who can teach others.

Next Gathering
• Sunday: Holy Communion service.
• Saturday: Barbecue at Catherine's house.

Iglesia del Nazareno de Barnsley
FUERTES EN LA GRACIA DE CRISTO

ESTUDIO BÍBLICO

Pasaje: 2 Timoteo 2

Attitudes towards Suffering for the Gospel
Barnsley Church of the Nazarene
Bible Study on 2 Timothy chapter 1

Key Outcomes
The Bible study examined 2 Timothy 1, focusing on Paul's encouragement to Timothy to remain unashamed of the gospel despite Paul's imprisonment. The session emphasized three core lessons: serving God with a pure conscience, stirring up spiritual gifts without fear, and supporting believers who suffer for their faith rather than abandoning them.

Main Teachings
Pure Conscience in Ministry
• Pure conscience means serving God with sincerity, following God's law wholeheartedly, without ulterior motives or double standards.
• Requires consistency across all contexts—church, home, work, and community—so that no one can blame your conduct.
• Revd. Dr. Osahon Jeremie I. Ogbeiwi shared personal testimony of his mother's influence through prayer, illustrating how genuine faith transfers across generations.

Genuine Faith Across Generations
• Genuine faith is original, true, and real—not false or pretended.
• Timothy's faith was rooted in two generations: grandmother Lois and mother Eunice.
• Children learn faith by observing parents pray, depend on God, and demonstrate consistency in Christian living.
• Mothers carry a significant responsibility for the spiritual formation of children; the study noted that most Bible study attendees were women.

Stirring Up Spiritual Gifts
• Key verse (2 Timothy 1:6-7): Timothy received God's gift through laying on of hands and must "stir up" or rekindle it.
• God gives the spirit of power, love, and sound mind—not fear.
• Fear can prevent believers from exercising gifts like healing, prophecy, words of knowledge, or speaking in tongues.
• Gifts become dormant through lack of use or discouragement from others; believers must boldly exercise them.
Attitude Toward Suffering Believers
• Paul's appeal (verses 8-12): Timothy should not be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul's imprisonment, but share in suffering.
• Negative example: Phygelus and Hermogenes from Asia deserted Paul when he was arrested.
• Positive example: Household of Onesiphorus searched diligently for Paul in prison, refreshed him, and showed no shame in his chains.
• Paul's confidence: "I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day".

Decisions Made
• Participants should underline verses 7 and 12 in their Bibles as foundational passages.
• The church will observe Pentecost Sunday as an opportunity for laying on of hands for those seeking spiritual gifts.

Application Points

Supporting Imprisoned Believers
• Do not abandon Christians suffering for their faith; visit them, pray for them, and provide material support.
• Write letters of encouragement to those in prison.
• Support ministries that help persecuted believers financially.
• Revd. Dr. Osahon Jeremie I. Ogbeiwi referenced a sister currently imprisoned whom the church should continue supporting.

Personal Commitments Shared
• Gillian: Be Christ-like and compassionate in all circumstances.
• Mirabel: Show love and maintain fellowship (koinonia) spirit; do not desert anyone.
• Blessing: Believe in your faith; do not be ashamed to tell people you are a Christian, even if it brings suffering.
• Grace: Stir up the gift God has given you; be on fire for the Lord.
• Jean: Keep the faith despite suffering; keep going like Paul.
• Catherine: Not be ashamed of the gospel; use gifts given; encourage those suffering
Open Questions Addressed
Why did Paul feel Timothy might be ashamed of his imprisonment?
Seeing Paul—the great apostle and teacher—in chains could discourage young Timothy, making him question whether Christianity leads only to suffering and imprisonment. This fear might prevent Timothy from exercising his spiritual gifts openly.

What specific gift did Timothy receive?
The passage does not specify which spiritual gift Timothy received through Paul's laying on of hands, though it was a gift that could become dormant and needed to be stirred up.

Pending Confirmation
• Address for the imprisoned sister to be shared with participants who wish to write encouragement letters.

Next Steps
• Participants to identify and actively use spiritual gifts rather than letting them lie dormant.
• Continue supporting the imprisoned church member through visits and correspondence.
• Mothers to take an active role in the spiritual formation of children through prayer and consistent Christian witness
• Next Bible study session scheduled for Monday

Barnsley Church of the Nazarene
District Assembly 2026 Report
Nazarene BISD, Church of the Nazarene Eurasia

I want to thank the district and the region for their massive investment in our Spanish ministry last year, sending us two regional staff, Esteban and Sugey, and now we have Stephani. They have been a huge blessing. Our church in Barnsley can be said to be a vision-oriented church operating on God’s promise stated in Habakkuk 2:1-4.

1. I will stand upon my watch and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say to me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
2. And the Lord answered me, and said, "Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables that he may run that reads it
3. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak and not lie: though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
4. Behold , his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

When I started pastoring Barnsley church in 2018, an older Baptist minister I was connected to by the church secretary for orientation told me that by his long experience with churches in different places, he saw our church closing in 5 years, that was church death by 2023! Also, when the district recommended the closure of the church I left in Ardsley barely 8 months after I tried so hard to help them survive with me as it’s visiting pastor, like Habakkuk, I started asking God questions about the future of the Barnsley Church.

Our vision became clear. With guidance of the district in 2020, we wrote it down and made it clear in a strategic church plan. That the church should be sustainable after 5 years, and in a viable state so another pastor coming after me would read our vision written upon the tablets and run with it!

Like Habakkuk, I have been a Watchman over Barnsley and heard God saying that the vision set for an appointed time will speak at the end, and not tarry. I have pastored, living by faith, and seen the church change by God’s grace from a struggling church to a growing church, with our registered membership increasing from 10 in 2018 to 38 in 2025. Also, the church is transformed from a traditional English church of mainly aged worshippers into a bilingual, multinational and intergenerational ministry, where cultural integration is a necessity but with a passion still to become more community oriented.

I am now 65 years old and due to retire soon. Please join me to pray for Barnsley Nazarene as it passes through yet another transition period. I seek to mentor a younger pastor who can bring a fresh passion, read our written vision and hsve enough zeal to run with it to fulfil God’s mandate for the next phase of Nazarene ministry at Barnsley.

I believe God’s plan for Barnsley is for the church to be a stable Family Church, an oasis where sinners come to make peace with their God and a strong fellowship where the weak is discipled to become God’s vessels of honour, carrying the Word and planting the gospel in every home in Barnsley. However, this vision is live now in Barnsley, but the attainment is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak and not lie: though it tarries, we shall wait for it.

Respectfully submitted,
Revd. Dr. Osahon Jeremie I. Ogbeiwi
Pastor, Barnsley Nazarene Church
