The Church’s community drop-in welcomed Barnsley Council South Area Team 's Men's health project on Thursday 4th June which aims to raise awareness about their own health. The men got to have their own blood pressure taken by the Healthy Barnsley team's How's Thi Ticker campaign which aims to encourage people with high blood pressure to be tested; they also had a haircut with a barber from Twenty Two Six as well as a natter with the barber. And they got to take a goodie bag home too!

We'd like to thank all our gentlemen who have participated in the project.

Wayne's words

The Wise Owl

I was so impressed with the wooden
carvings dotted around Newmillerdam,
located in West Yorkshire.

The owl caught my attention. It was so
well matched to its surroundings I almost
missed it.

The famous nursery rhyme ‘A Wise Owl’
was first published in 1875 in Punch
magazine. The original lyrics were:

“There was an owl liv’d in an oak.
The more he heard, the less he spoke,
The less he spoke, the more he heard.
O, if men were all like that wise bird.”

Owls are considered to be wise and this rhyme emphasises the wisdom of stopping, pausing, and listening rather than reacting without thinking.

We may be familiar with the phrase "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread." Despite the reference to angels, this is not found in the Bible. It was actually coined by Alexander Pope in his famous poem ‘An Essay in Criticism’ in 1711.

In the Bible we find a text echoing these words in Proverbs 14.16

"The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with
reckless confidence."

Biblical wisdom emphasises hearing, learning and understanding:

Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, Proverbs 1:5

Be "wise like an owl” listen more than speaking, observing carefully, and maintain a broad perspective.

Wayne’s Words

Poppies – A second glance

I was driving along a nearby country lane, when out of the corner of my eye I glimpsed a wonderful cluster of poppies soaking up the morning sunshine against an old wall.

Not only did I take a second glace, but I slowed down and pulled up my car to take a closer look and a photograph.

It made me aware of how important ‘second glances’ are.

Most people are familiar with the Old Testament story of Moses and the burning bush (Exodus chapter 3). But we often fail to pick up on a minor detail. Moses had to take a second glance.

And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush,“Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am. Exodus 3.3-4

Moses stopped his daily routine and decided to take a second glance. He took a closer look at a blazing bush that did not to burn up. This simple glance led to a profound encounter with God and a wonderful adventure filled with miracles and mystery.

This story encourages us to take a ‘second glance’ and have the courage to look closer. When we do, we may encounter something special and be blessed with a multitude of new experiences.

If something catches your attention don’t ignore it, slow down and take a closer look. Appreciate the moment.

"Take a second look; you might not have seen it all." - Matthew Williamson
